I took the 3 most powerful and descriptive sections that illustrate my views on this song. I love this song, and my meaning might not be the 'right ' one, but I think it fits. What I put in [] is what I picture a music video would do to explain some of the more cryptic lyrics.
"If all the roads were paved with ice
That wouldn't thaw or crack
I could skate from Maine to Nebraska
Then on to Alaska and back
'Cause you keep me warm"
He can do anything with her at his back. She supports him and he feels invincible. This is something that he loves, but she doesn't. He can't see that supporting him drains her. In the song it is skating.
"Peer over the edge
Can you see me?-----------------------------------[She is passed out in the shower]
Rivulets flow from your eyes
Paint runs from your mouth like a waterfall-------[Blood on the sink]
And your lungs crystallize------------------------[Meth pipe]
I'll travel the sub-zero tundra
I'll break glaciers and frozen lakes--------------[Take her to the hospital]
And that's just the tip of the iceberg
I'll do whatever it takes to change"
She couldn't handle giving him all her support. She turned to something else, something destructive. I see that as being drugs. It could be anything.
"Farewell powdery paradise
We'd rather skate on the thinnest ice
Fingers failed us before they froze
Frostbite bit down on all our toes
Snow drifts build up and enfold us
As we wait in this winter storm
So we snuggle close in the darkness
And keep each other so warm"
He gives up 'skating' and decides to focus on her more. He is willing to give up ehat he loves to support her, like she was in the beginning. They focus on eachother rather something external, thier love flourishes.
Not trying to be an ass, but I don't think Meth is anything Adam Young would write about, he's a very positive, vibrant guy, and I don't think he'd focus on something like that.

i don't think peer over the edge means that she fell in a shower... i think look over the edge means that she's on drugs, but if she tries hard enough she can see that adam wants to help her and she's willing to let him.. i can't really explain it, but i think you get what i mean...

i think you're on the right track anyway though. idk what the beginning means... but "POWDERY paradise"? yeah, drugs. "we'd rather skate on the thinnest ice" they'd rather take a chance in facing their problems then avoiding them with drugs

it basically means that even though there are still tough times, she/he won't turn to drugs because adam is there to help him/her

"POWDERY paradise" is refering to snow. Having gone skiing on newly fallen snow, its very "powdery". Adam Young is a Christian and wouldnt sing about drugs. :)

This is a too sinister meaning to be true.
