Will There Be Enough Water? Lyrics
Will there be enough water,
When my ship comes in?
And when I set sail,
Will there be enough wind?
Just because you caught me,
Does that make it a sin?
Cool water
And the cool wind
When my ship comes in?
Will there be enough wind?
Does that make it a sin?
And the cool wind

I think this is someone questioning their future, asking if there will be enough to get him sailing through life (of opportunity or luck) when his time comes.
But yes, when performed live, seems to turn audio-sex.
We know Jack White was raised Roman Catholic and almost went into the seminary to become a priest. So, my understanding of the lyrics go back to Catholic teachings.
“Will there be enough water when my ship comes in?”
Which leads to… “Just because you caught me, does that make it a sin?”
pretty sweet song. not sure what it means. but it does have this real gritty bluesy natural feel both in the music and in the lyrics. the piano is really hypnotic and jack's guitar is so old time soundin. the lyrics are just really simple which i love. just the wind and the water. i get the image of a man on a small raft/boat in the middle of the ocean in the middle of a storm.
I get the image of Jack absolutely melting some faces off White Stripes style... cause that's what he turns this into when played live.

i know i saw it on youtube....it was insane

It's extremely mysterious though. Do you think that the phrase "Just because you caught me, does that make it a sin?" gives the key to the reste of the song, which is more lyrical and vague ? Then it could say something about men/women relationships I guess
it was apparently part of a long 20 minute jam with made up lyrics.
they took 6 minutes and put it on the album. Alison was surprised because she couldn't remember recording the song.
i don't think the lyrics are particularly meaningful.
Sexy as hell when performed live though.

When my good times finally get here will i be able to get there? When it's time for me to get out or leave will i be able to?
Just because you caught me, Does that make it a sin?
All i need is some Cool water And the cool wind
Damn this is a great, moody, dark, and ohhhh so soulful song. I could jam to this for 20 minutes at a time and start it all over again.
I always get the image of a man at a bar, drinking water (Beer). The term water is used instead because it's become just another drink to him. Then I get the feeling he's asking will there be enough to get him by for his reckoning.
"Will there be enough water, When my ship comes in?
And when I set sail, Will there be enough wind?"
After all this he's asking if it really matters what he's done and that last verse for cool water and cool wind is him starting over with real water and leaving the bar.
"Just because you caught me, Does that make it a sin?
Cool water And the cool wind ."
I think this song makes a lot of sense. 'When my ship comes in' is a common phrase, as in, when opportunity comes. It's basically saying, when my opportunity arises, will I be able to take it? will it get me anywhere?
I'd love to know the meaning behind the line 'just because you caught me, does that make it a sin?'.
The song as it is on the album is great. Seeing it preformed live - is by far the best ever. Jack's guitar solos are always amazing. I've been lucky enough to see it three times - once from front row (shot video, put it on youtube) - there are just no words.
cool water. & a cool wind. anything else?
