The Escape Artist Lyrics
Open your closed mind
Close your open mouth
You're pushing more than you're pulling
Every word that you say passes through my ears
Before it even escapes your lips
No one learns from someone they hate.
Your mouth is like a grenade, blowing everyone away.
How many have you pushed away? And How many have you saved?
Pick and choose
Based on our faiths
When it's all in the heart that carries rage
Don't judge
until you've taken it all in.
Cause in the end you'll pray to stay above the flames
Open your closed mind
And close your open mouth
You're pushing more than you are pulling
Close your open mouth
You're pushing more than you're pulling
Before it even escapes your lips
No one learns from someone they hate.
Your mouth is like a grenade, blowing everyone away.
How many have you pushed away? And How many have you saved?
Pick and choose
Based on our faiths
When it's all in the heart that carries rage
Don't judge
until you've taken it all in.
Cause in the end you'll pray to stay above the flames
And close your open mouth
You're pushing more than you are pulling

in my opinion, this song can be summed up in 3 letters. WBC. It seems to be clearly referencing them in several parts of the song. i.e.- no one learns from someone they hate. I haven't spoken to many people who don't "hate" the WBC. also, the line "How many have you pushed away? And how many have you saved?" could be a direct question to the organization themselves. they claim that their protests are only in the interests of saving people, but, i seriously doubt that anyone has joined their church because of the shock of their protests. Basically, I think that ABR is telling these extremists to lighten up, because that kind of strategy doesn't work. But, I could be completely off.... this is my favorite song off of this album anyway, lol
i'm not sure if it's "mind" or eyes", it sounded like eyes to me at first. but mind would make a lot more sense.
and i think it's, "no one listens to someone they hate"?
no, those lyrics are definitely right. listen to the second time he says, "no one learns...". It's at around 0:41. Right there he definitely says "No one learns from someone they hate."

That's how it should be
I think it's trying to say don't judge people for their beliefs and don't shove your beliefs down someone else's throat. However just listen to what people have to say about their beliefs and then tell them what you think. And by having a closed mind you are pushing people away from your religion by being so pushy and ignorant.
Maybe? Just my guess at it.

i believe you are correct. thats what i got from this song. not to pick fights but this is the second best from the new album, the first is marianas trench.
I agree with muffinman as well, such a sick song. Definitely one of my favorites on the album.
Jake sounds so brutal at the beginning when he says "ears" lol
Definitely one of the better songs on the album. Marianas Trench is probably the best, but that entire midsection of Constellations is great.

I agree with the meaning muffiman posted. I love the "your mouth is like a grenade line."

i think what they are referring to is those type of Christians that look at someone and think "i don't like them", and shun them from the church community. as a result those people are scared away from Christianity and may never come back and in the end the people who did that to them will pray to GOD they wont go to hell for being such absolute jerks.
p.s. i have personal experiences of this so phenomena, and yes it does happen
