Gasoline Lyrics
Oh well, oh well
I guess you got it all worked out so far
You adjust your reason
Until you see the light from where you are
You can never win, you can never lose
That's the worst part
You can only say that what you want is where you are
You're beautiful, girl
Won't you listen to me
Well I tried so hard to give you what you need
And it burned like gasoline
Oh well, oh well
It never took a lot to make this hard
'Cause you're so off-balance
And I knew all the words to set you off
But you can never win, you can never lose
That's the scorned heart
Then you throw your head back
And you laugh at where we are
You're beautiful, girl
So won't you listen to me
Well I tried so hard to give you what you need
And it burned like gasoline
Won't you listen to me
Well I tried so hard to give you what you need
And it burned like gasoline
I guess you got it all worked out so far
You adjust your reason
Until you see the light from where you are
You can never win, you can never lose
That's the worst part
You can only say that what you want is where you are
Won't you listen to me
Well I tried so hard to give you what you need
And it burned like gasoline
It never took a lot to make this hard
'Cause you're so off-balance
And I knew all the words to set you off
But you can never win, you can never lose
That's the scorned heart
Then you throw your head back
And you laugh at where we are
So won't you listen to me
Well I tried so hard to give you what you need
And it burned like gasoline
Well I tried so hard to give you what you need
And it burned like gasoline

i think this song is about living in the middle, so you can't win but you can't lose either. The girl he is singing to just rationalizes everything "You adjust your reason Until you see the light from where you are" so that she seems happy but really she's just complacent. He tried to help her find something better, but it was too fleeting, hence "it burned like gasoline"
I don't think this song has to be about a gf/bf relationship. Probably because I can't relate to it in that way. My interpretation of this song is a person trying to tell someone - a girl obviously- how they feel but she wont listen.

She tries to shut all the painful memories of an incident that they both went through together out. She thinks she has "got it all worked out so far".

The song is obviously sung from someone who wants to and has tried desperately to help her and has failed. They see that she "adjusts her reason until she sees the light from where she is". I think this means that she masks happiness and she tries so deperately to see the good things to shut the bad things away. Sort of lying to herself. Saying everything is fine. She doesn't need fixing, there is nothing wrong with her.
"But you can never win, you can never lose. That's the worst part. You can only say that what you want is where you are." I think this means that inside her she can't ever win and to others she can't ever lose. Because everyone except one person believes she is doing fine. She doesn't want her past brought up. She just wants to believe that she just wants what she has. She doesn't want to deal with her demons..
In the chorus the person trying to help her is pleading for her to listen to what they have to say. They want her to know they tried so hard to help her work through it but because she didn't want to it burned the person helping like gasoline.
They fight so much because she doesn't want help and the person wants so much to heal her. "oh well, oh well. It never took a lot to make this hard. Cause you're so off balance and i knew all the words to set you off." He/she doesn't have to say much for her to lose it and go off. He has all the right words to make her angry.
"Then you throw your head back and you laugh at where we are" means to me that she tries to get over their fight like it was nothing. She laughs at where they both are. To make it easier maybe? It's hard for me to explain.
The person is giving up trying to help her because they have gone out of their way trying and they are so emotionally drained. They don't know how to try anymore. They accept that she doesn't want their help. Maybe she will come around in time and work through her problems.
You live in the middle of what you want and what you don't. And you feel like you are stuck there, so you lie and say that is where you want to be. You pretend you are happy, 'you see the light from where you are' you try and see the good parts where they aren't. And he wants to help her, but it pushes her away from him, so it burned like gasoline. He is trying to give her what she needs, but it does everything bad to him.
