A BANQUET FOR TRAITORS Lyrics
Again, I wake to you... Stand up, these feet are so far from clean.
I'm undeserving of the strength in your arms used to save me.
But years passed when i saw Eve next to me,
she's wrapped in low-cut, dripping sensuality.
I remember the host, but it's been so long since we spoke.
He said, "My son, you can hold perfection in your arms if you wish."
but i sit at a banquet for traitors
placed here between a thief and a liar.
"Just run and hold perfection in your arms as I slip..."
but i'll make you the god of a liar
cause i've been both a saint and a viper.
I'll make you the god of a liar.
I am a lie, just like these traitors that cry for forgiving replies
but keep their grips held tight.
Though my eye's on Eve you're ready to bleed as if I'm royalty
but I am no king. I am no king.
His life spilled like a tide so divine.
It was a blood soaked feast that never ceased as his veins dripped empty.
With such violent grace, the waves hit my face
and in painful clarity i turned fearfully...
"What makes you think you can deserve me?
WHAT MAKES YOU THINK YOU CAN DESERVE ME?"
My host fell to His knees as paling lips pushed His plea...
"My son, you can hold perfection in your arms if you wish."
but i sit at a banquet for traitors, placed here between a thief and a liar.
"Just run and hold perfection in your arms as I slip..."
but i'll make you the god of a liar
cause i've been both a saint and a viper.
By grace uneven, at the banquet portrayed, through death, this life is saved.
But I am no king! I am no...
"Open your eyes, child, your sea is changing"
I'm undeserving of the strength in your arms used to save me.

I totally agree. If this song hadn't already been posted on, I would have probably said the same thing... Seriously awesome song though!!
Good thoughts guys but I think I have this one. This is about Satan trying to pry the faithful from God.
Again, I wake to you...Stand up, these feet are so far from clean. I'm undeserving of the strength in your arms used to save me.
This is what he's thinking just before he falls "asleep", he's speaking to himself first then God, this is the same man from fire dawn I believe. He's keeping himself from God's embrace by labeling himself unworthy.
But years passed when I saw Eve next to me, she's wrapped in low-cut, dripping sensuality.
When he wakes up Eve is next to him feeding into his past inclination toward lust (In All Honesty) Satan has brought the most beautiful traitor of all, Eve.
I remember the host, but it's been so long since we spoke. He said, "My son, you can hold perfection in your arms if you wish."
He's weak, it feels like it's been years since he's spoken to God (The Host being Christ in the Eucharist) "He" is Satan tempting one of God's flock. Perfection being Eve.
But I sit at a banquet for traitors placed here between a thief and a liar.
This is his response to Satans temptation, the thief being Eve (Stole the apple) and a Liar (Satan himself)
But I'll make you the god of a liar cause I've been both a saint and a viper.
He's saying if he gave in he'd be making Satan the god of a liar, he's been a sinner so by turning to Satan his repentance would be a lie.
I am a lie, just like these traitors that cry for forgiving replies but keep their grips held tight. Though my eye's on Eve you're ready to bleed as if I'm royalty but I am no king. I am no king.
At first he's speaking about those already in hell (I'd say purgatory but I'm trying to avoid getting to theological) who refuse to let go of their sins and past transgressions so they can't meet the Lord. Then he comments to Satan about how pathetic it is that he is willing to give up something so precious to one as unimportant as him. He is no King.
It was a blood soaked feast that never ceased as his veins dripped empty. With such violent grace, the waves hit my face and in painful clarity i turned fearfully... "What makes you think you can deserve me?"
He's at first speaking about the disgusting feast placed before him, next I believe he's speaking about his love for God breaking through the intoxication Satan has put him in, then he turn to Satan knowing his Father is God says "What makes you think you can deserve me?"
My host fell to His knees as paling lips pushed His plea...
Satan began begging him to reconsider.
By grace uneven, at the banquet portrayed, through death, this life is saved. But I am no king! I am no... "Open your eyes, child, your sea is changing"
Because God is so good, through Jesus death his life is saved. The line after shows how quickly after his rebuking Satan that God took him into his arms, so quickly he doesn't get to finish his fearful sentence.
"Open your eyes, child, your sea is changing" This is God telling him he's home now.
I think that this song is telling how a man is being approached my God to be saved, but is not willing to except. He feels like he doesn't deserve saving, that he is the same as every other sinner in the world-"but i sit at a banquet for traitors placed here between a thief and a liar." He is saying he's no different than anyone else. God replies telling him that if he would just except Him, he could have the life and forgiveness he wants and needs-"My son, you can hold perfection in your arms if you wish." When God is dying for him-"His life spilled like a tide so divine. It was a blood soaked feast that never ceased as his veins dripped empty. With such violent grace, the waves hit my face and in painful clarity i turned fearfully..."-he begins to try and anger God, and make Him not want to help him-"What makes you think you can deserve me? WHAT MAKES YOU THINK YOU CAN DESERVE ME?"-but He continued trying and pleaing with the man. And in God's death, the man starts to argue again, but finally accepts the Lord and is reborn and given a new life. God tell's him at the end that his life is now at the turning point.-By grace uneven, at the banquet portrayed, through death, this life is saved. But I am no king! I am no... "Open your eyes, child, your sea is changing"-
That's my take, feel free to give your input
Nope. That must be about Satan/Lucifer. You can understand that from "But years passed when I saw Eve next to me".
I think this song is about satan offering Jesus to be king of the earth - "I'll make you the god of a liar, cause i've been both a saint and a viper" But He answers- "what makes you think you can deserve me" I am probably wrong 'cause I not christian but that is what I understand Oh, sleeper is a great band Their music moves you even if your not christian
I think there is something about satan tempting Jesus in the bible as I said it before I'm not christian so I think someone can explain it better than me

There is Elihu, in Luke 4:5-7..."The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. And he said to him, "I will give you all their authority and splendor, for it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. So if you worship me, it will all be yours." But then I think Satan led him to the Temple of Jerusalem and made him stand on the highest point and told him, "If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down from here. For it is written: "He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone."
Jesus answered, "It says: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.
When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.
I can see what you mean but that's not the way Micah intended the song 2 mean. Micah said in an interview that the 1st song is Satan challenging God n the last in the album is God smashing Satan n the middle songs r God speaking to people in different parts of their lives and building his army for the final battle between God and Satan.

I think this song is one of the people saying to God that he doesnt deserve to be saved but Jesus is saying "Just run, you can hold perfection in your arms as i slip" so Jesus is pleading with the person to just trust him and accept the amazing gift God has offered him.
Best song on the album in my opinion. I'm pretty sure it's about a man wrestling with God (Gen 35 I think, check out Jacob). The song has a lot of the themes that are portrayed throughout Oh, Sleeper's music, sexual addiction, unworthiness, insignificance, and God being like "dude, I love you, shut up and follow me." "Although my eye's on eve you're ready to bleed for me as if I'm royalty." I love that line, I think it brings up some of those themes. It's basically Adam's lamentations through his sons, we woke up one day, and eve became this pillar of sex (figuratively anyway). I'm pretty sure that's how Micah intended this song.
I think this song is about Satan's temptation of Adam and Eve. "The Host" of the song is God and how Adam tried to hide from him Eve was tempted to eat from the tree and he did as well. The line "My son, you can hold perfection in your arms if you wish" is Satan talking about how eating from the tree would make them Gods. Satan is the liar in the song and Eve is the thief for stealing from the tree. The second half of the song is more upbeat lyrically, with Adam being humbled and stating how he is not a king, and by God's grace he is still saved. That's what I get out of it anyway.
Makes sense, But I keep thinking that the host is that one who said, "You can hold perfection in your arms if you wish" because I can't find another "he" that it could refer to. That's what is stumping me. But maybe the host is Satan, since its a banquet of traitors. I thought that God was bringing traitors to Him as the host, but I think the host is Satan. I still think the host might also be God. Brain Hurt! I can see the perfection as an earthly lustful perfection and also a spiritual perfection. If it is...

If it is Satan telling him to obtain an earthly perfection, he is stating that he wants nothing to do with it, but I don't see this because he states "I am no king". I think maybe he's saying that he doesn't deserve perfection because he is unworthy and the Host is ready to bleed (the cross) as if he is royalty. And the speaking moment near the end is about him witnessing the sacrifice of his host, while his host is saying that he can't deserve Him. The whole "I'll make you a God of a liar is saying that since he is a liar, if God becomes his God, God will be ruling over him. Now that I think about it, the host has to be God.
im not sure what the overall meaning of the song is but the lines " my son you can hold perfection in your arms if you wish" but i sit at the banquet for traitors. i think this is when satan was tempting Jesus telling him he could do whatever he wants but instead jesus would rather sit at the banquet with traitors, between the thief and the liar because thats what jesus came here to do. he came here to save the world not rule it. thats what i think anyway
i think its about Adam talking about how satan tricked him and eve. Adam says WHAT MAKES YOU THINK YOU CAN DESERVE ME?" yelling at satan saying im a servant of god why should i trust you satan is the host My host fell to His knees as paling lips pushed His plea..."My son, you can hold perfection in your arms if you wish." perfection is the apple or fruit of knowledge. the thief is Eve for stealing the apple. the liar Adam for lying to GOD about why they are hiding and clothed. His life spilled like a tide so divine. It was a blood soaked feast that never ceased as his veins dripped empty. With such violent grace, the waves hit my face. this is Adamn talking about Jesus sacrificing himself on the cross. satan also says Though my eyes on Eve your ready to bleed as if Im royalty but I am no king. I am no king.because he isnt a king or royalty and they would throw it all away for greed"Just run and hold perfection in your arms as I slip... satan slithers away as a viper "but Ill make you the god of a liar - every thing satan says is a lie so when he tells adamn ill make you a god of a liar hes talking about himself (satan) Ive been both a saint and a viper.when satan says hes been a saint/angel also viper/snake the sea is changing means god cast out adam and eve from the garden and makes them mortal
I stick with most of that but I actually now think that "as his veins dripped empty." was him about to die and everything subsequent was Satan trying to tempt him one last time before death. With God pulling him to life to finish what he started when he rebuked Satan. So now purified, free of self doubt, and badly maimed he continues in Commissioned by Kings.
