I'm pretty sure this song is written from Satan's perspective. Satan fears a world without the sun because he knows that it means his end is coming soon (one of the seals in revelation is blotting out the sun). So, he fears his end, but even though he faces his end, he still doesn't fear God (the one who actually took the sun away).
So in my opinion, this is the only song on the album that is complicated enough to require any delving into to understand the metaphors. The other ones are pretty simple once you understand the overall theme. This one though deals with lots of symbolism of trees and sun and cold and ground...I'm not done thinking about it, so normally I wouldn't post yet but...I wanted to reply to Marinas. Good job in your analysis of this and for saving Reveries of Flight; some people didn't get it. Also, I'm gonna be really blunt, as a pastor's kid. If you hate religion, then religion's doing a bad job.

In my opinion, Religion is a great thing to have. Surrounding yourself with fellow believers and what not is a great idea. It just isn't executed as well as most would like i think. I'm Christian, but I am not religious if that makes sense. I believe in God and that Jesus is my savior, but I think that I need to pursue truth on my own path. And that doesn't include making worship become a redundant and systematic thing every sunday. It loses its glow for alot of people and it just becomes a routine thing that they dont...

And alot of Catholics, Lutherans, etc. won't accept my views because I think they are scared to introduce new ideas into their routine. If you focus on you and God i think that that's what will really matter. I would seek church for guidance (to an extent) but church isn't what's going to save me. But to me being a christian isn't a religion, it literally means "little christ" and for me that's the goal :)

i really think that the sun is a symbol for the Son (jesus) and how if he didn't come life would become hell. thats why we will fear to see what he kept us away from (hell). I fear a world with out the Son but never who wished him gone (the devil).
100% man. He fears the Rapture. Jesus will return, and believers will be rewarded with eternal life. The non-believers will be left behind. So, yes. This guy is afraid of being left behind. He fears a world without God... Great insights guys. Great album!! God bless!

surrendered, ur close but uve got it around the wrong way.. right concept tho.. this song is the hardest on the album because it is the final apocalypse before satans birth.. think of the worlds greatest evil force preparing their attack.. like before a massive storm.. the sun wont rise.. stone and ice form the devils army (metaphorical).. the trees are dead but theyre alive more than ever (the cold and lack of sunlight has killed the earth but its alive more than ever with the presence of satans army about to become born again)...
its sung from the perepective of a mortal.. a believer in god.. he is saying he fears a world without the sun but never the evil who wished it gone (which is where the concept surrendered outlined is on the right track)..

im not religious at all.. in fact i hate religion.. but these guys are phenomenal in the way they create such an epic battle in the listeners mind (lyrically, vocally and musically).. awesome band...
Marinas is pretty much dead on about the meaning. Check out Matthew 24. I think he got the idea of this song from this chapter and or The Book of Revelations which says that the sixth seal is when the sun turns black
"The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, and the stars in the sky fell to earth"
In Matthew 24:9 Jesus says "the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light" So I believe when he says he "fear[s] a world without the sun" he's saying he fears the world that will exist after the end has begun.
I agree that this song is about how much things would suck if we didint have the sun/son, but this is primarily imagery form dantes inferno. In the inferno, dante says that the lower circles are frozen by the flapping of satans wings, freezing the world of stone. the part about the trees is especially interesting. in canto XIII, the second round of the seventh circle is the wood of the suicides where their souls are traped in dead trees where flesh grows out instead of leaves and they are picked off and eaten by the harpies. nasty stuff, but i think it is likley that this is what is being discribed. as a matter of fact, just about all imagery of hell comes from dantes inferno or the Aneaid, not the bible. i challenge you to find a spiritual death (hell) refference in the bible that describes anything but simply the grave or the fire.
