The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
After all this time
Girl you know by now I can read your mind
Why would you keep something from me?
Your best kept secrets are the ones I want to know
I really want to know
Don't tell me that you're fine
When you know what you mean to me
Don't tell me that you're fine
When I'm not there and its plain to see
Well I know that means you love me
And you're missing me tonight
So it hurts to hear you whisper
I'm fine
Girl I know that sigh
Your gentle breath that hides a simple lie
If I could only see your eyes
Holding back the tears you gonna cry
So baby please don't cry
Don't tell me that you're fine
When you know what you mean to me
Don't tell me that you're fine
When I'm not there and its plain to see
Well I know that means you love me
And you're missing me tonight
So it hurts to hear you whisper
I'm fine
Don't lie to me
Don't lie to me
Don't tell me that you're fine
When you know what you mean to me
Don't tell me that you're fine
When I'm not there and its plain to see
Well I know that means you love me
And you're missing me tonight
So it hurts to hear you whisper
I'm fine
Whoa, I'm fine
Girl you know by now I can read your mind
Why would you keep something from me?
Your best kept secrets are the ones I want to know
I really want to know
Don't tell me that you're fine
When you know what you mean to me
Don't tell me that you're fine
When I'm not there and its plain to see
Well I know that means you love me
And you're missing me tonight
So it hurts to hear you whisper
I'm fine
Girl I know that sigh
Your gentle breath that hides a simple lie
If I could only see your eyes
Holding back the tears you gonna cry
So baby please don't cry
Don't tell me that you're fine
When you know what you mean to me
Don't tell me that you're fine
When I'm not there and its plain to see
Well I know that means you love me
And you're missing me tonight
So it hurts to hear you whisper
I'm fine
Don't lie to me
Don't lie to me
Don't tell me that you're fine
When you know what you mean to me
Don't tell me that you're fine
When I'm not there and its plain to see
Well I know that means you love me
And you're missing me tonight
So it hurts to hear you whisper
I'm fine
Whoa, I'm fine
