The Caudal Lure Lyrics

Ask a question
Are the answers loaded like this one?
You better pull yourself along
Time is precious and you must act
This isn't inevitable
I still stand
I won't get back in my cell
I will not let a savior define my freedom
I'm going out alone
No one is gonna save us from this

We should have known better not to taste this wine we swallow
For all and more, we set our recourse for tomorrow
Now we command, we will awake this snake and follow

Shatter the hour glass and what do you see
Memories like grains of sand are blowing away
Is this who you are, a product of fear
The shell of a man who lost his innocence
Hold your nerve, keep your focus
There's something peculiar about the way
You pay to save your soul, but forfeit your dream
Just let it go

We should have known better not to drink this wine we swallow
For all and more, we set our recourse for tomorrow
Now here we stand, we will embrace it or be defiant
Final moment, taken by these chemicals you can't control

Ask the question
Ask the question
Ask the question

We should have known better not to drink this wine we swallow
For all and more, we set our recourse for tomorrow
Now we could mend, we will embrace it or be defiant
Silent moment, induced by these chemicals you can't control

(Where's your god, where's your god at, alone)
(Where's your god, where's your god at, alone)
(Leave me alone)
(Where's your god, where's your god at, alone)
(Where's your god, where's your god at, alone)
(Leave me alone)

Yeah, i reckon you're dead right payphone. A Caudal Lure is when a snake buries itself and leaves just the tip of its tail out in a hope to attract prey. So i reckon religion is analogous to the snake in this song.

This song appears very religious on the surface, with the references to god, 'the wine we swallow' and 'we will awake the snake and follow', ' I will not let a saviour define my freedom'. So to me it feels very much like going against the view of religion and why does everyone keep following blindly and to 'Ask the question' maybe why, how, what? That's just me, but I love the 2nd verse, powerful lyrics.

@Payph0ne Afaik, the entire album is the journey of 1 guy waking up.

With no dought, Australia's most instrumentaly, musically and underrated band (underrated purely in an audience size sense). I truly do believe Karnivool's music is fast becoming not just the standard for prog rock, but the audible definition of the genre. Not only can you enjoy the music your listening too, but one can also truly appreciate it, some would say for this they are Australia's TOOL.

Also i just have to say, the lyrics: "There's something peculiar about the way, You pay to save your soul, But forfeit your dream"; just really nocks on the head, my daily frustration of when i have the time and sit back and see all the bezare impacts religion still has on our world today.

Caudal's definition can loosely be inferior. If the speaker in this were the church, it would be them/the church asking this simple boy, (Where's your god, where's your god at, alone). Perhaps alienating him? We already know that to be "awake" is lonely, and it could be hard to turn people around when you're being stigmatized / discriminated against.

Followed by him saying "Leave me alone" because he doesn't want to be alienated from everyone in turn to just mind his own business and help people without their interference.

That's what I got from this anyways.

Just some nitpicking guys.. I'm pretty sure the line is "I would not let a saviour define my freedom", instead of 'will'. Otherwise I reckon you're spot on with the meanings..

Just heard of these guys while reviewing an effects peddle at sweetwater. Love the music! This is the first song I've actually checked the lyrics on and while I'm not surprised with the anti-God feel about the song which it is common place today. The in-thing now is to be anti-God. They almost reference islam perfectly.

Karnivool aren't as big as they should be in Australia. Went to one of their shows in Sydney, huge turn out but still not many people know who they are. It's disappointing for such a great Australian band!

The whole album follows a very anti-religious theme, however in most cases it is fairly subtle. You really have to listen to the lyrics to pick up on it for the most part.

Its amazing how bands grow and evolve, and just like COG and The Butterfly Effect, Karnivool have really come into their own as one of the great Australian bands. Its interesting, lots of people know of and like them, but you will never hear one of their songs on commercial radio. Maybe thats a good thing though, we get to keep all the goodness to ourselves :)
