Through The Pain Lyrics

On the Chicago river after dark
We watch the city lights tear the sky apart
The wind was blowing your hair around
As the scenery explodes, I'll tell you how

I fell into an old cliché
Always on the road, only halfway sane
No hospital can fix what I've become

I've trapped myself in a ring of fire
If I say I'm ok, I'm also a liar
The only way out is through the pain
How am I gonna get through this?

I got so low that I get high
Just to sit and watch the miles go by
Now I'm cold and sweaty with a nauseous heart
I got a million addictions wearing me down

I fell into an old cliché
Always on the road only halfway sane

I've trapped myself in a ring of fire
If I say I'm ok, I'm also a liar
The only way out is through the pain

And as I write these words, my hands start to shake
Withdrawal's kicking in, not a second too late
The only way out is through the pain
Tomorrow I'll start again

And now I'm begging for help I know I can't get
I've gotta face this one alone
And if I don't make it
Remember that I'll always be a part of you

I've trapped myself in a ring of fire
If I say I'm ok, I'm also a liar
The only way out is through the pain

And as I write these words, my hands start to shake
With trouble sneaking in not a second too late
The only way out is through the pain
Tomorrow I'll start again

First of all... "Withdrawal's kicking in not a second too late."

&

"And now I'm begging for help I know I can't; I've gotta face this one alone."

As for meaning, I guess it's kind of obvious. Given that he says something about getting high, and mentions withdrawal along with a lot of its symptoms... It's about drug addiction, and getting over it. Or making a parallel to the world overall by creating the whole drug addiction metaphor to convey a point about people in general... Really, the only way out of anything is "through the pain". I think that it's more about being addicted to like, prescription meds though... but I can't be sure. At least, it's about being addicted to whatever it is that he's taking to quiet the voices in his head that he references in "Welcome to Oblivion" and "Silent Voices Kill".

The only thing I can't really be sure about is the line "Tomorrow I'll start again". It could mean that even after fighting with withdrawal, he's only going to go back to using whatever he's addicted to OR it could mean he's starting again as in living a new life without addiction.

Either way... this is one of my favorites off of Attics. It's amazing. :)

Sorry, I meant: "And now I'm begging for help I know I can't GET" I missed a word. haha.

I agree, though he does say he has multiple addictions. No matter what the addiction is, it is always going to wear people down like this. He says it so perfectly. I am so grateful for this song.

Song Meaning

This song is about confessing all the awful things that you have done in your life to someone you love and crying out for help. Hypothetically, say you are addicted to drugs, the only way to get better is to go through withdrawal to get well again. Whether that's in a relationship and you have to break up, or you are in a job and you have to change, it may be terrifying, but you have to go through the hard part to get better
