Petty Lyrics

Is this it at the top
I didn't know there was not a ceiling
Or that the air up here was so thin
I just want my wanting to stop
I know you warned us of drought
We didn't believe it
Now we can't keep water from freezing

You are just in time to move aside
No one ever comes here stays for long
You're gonna be dethroned
You're gonna shed your pride
Overgrown

There's a kid on the cover
And I know that he doesn't believe
In the misery that he sings
Yea it's just what he thinks he needs

If all the world's a stage then it's not mine
'Cause no eye ever stays on you for long
You're gonna be dethroned
You're gonna shed your pride
It keeps growing

And you are just in time to move aside
No one ever comes here stays for long
You're gonna be dethroned
You're gonna shed your pride
If all the world's a stage then it's not mine
'Cause no eye ever stays on you for long
Yea you're gonna be dethroned
You're gonna shed your pride
Overgrown

Honestly I think its about getting caught up in fame....there's more to life people move on from scence to scene. U think your great but people will eventually move on... and maybe bands not believing in what they sing about just sayin it to be popular.. its sad lol I dunno that's just what I got out of it

My boyfriend is convinced this song is about Craig Owens of Chiodos. He uses the lyrics "all the worlds a stage" and actually has this tattooed across his chest. And also " and i know that he doesn't believe in the misery that he sings"

It's an interesting way to look at it. Any thoughts?

all the world's a stage is a reference to shakespeare

i agree with your boyfriend. the part of the song that says.

"There's a kid on the cover" (talking about magazines, and perhaps the fact that Craig is the frontman of chiodos)

And I know that he doesn't believe In the misery that he sings Yea it's just what he thinks he needs "

really it's a total shot at craig, if you ask me. and besides, what's the chances that two alternative bands are quoting the exact same line of shakespeare? it's especially bait, since it's tattooed on craig's chest, and it's in his song (undertaker's thirst for revenge)....

Agreed. Listening to the song more and more I really think it's directly about him.

I think this is a shot at him though, I believe that the Shakespearian connections are more of a coincidence In the song he says "is this it at the top?" and "you're just in time to move aside, no one ever comes here stays for long" basically addressing the fleeting nature of interests in that scene. and the whole recurring theme of pride being wicked and all of that. It's well known that Craig was kicked out of his own band for being a douche bag, its not a secret. And nick, I do think that they have a lot of integrity but there are other people who are pissed off at the type of music/attitudes that are coming out of big bands that are also speaking out against it. Keith Buckley from ETID another very well respected band wrote an article about it:

http://www.altpress.com/contributors/entry/give_me_something_to_break._seriously/

ACB themselves entitled the song "petty" because it is petty that they are saying it but he believes it needed to be said. I've shared the stage with these dudes more than a few times and they do have a lot of integrity but they are also willing to stand up for what they think is right, regardless of what anyone else thinks. We have all seen that dude be an asshole to a lot of people and when people are like that towards your friends and your fans, it pisses you off. I thought it was funny that Craig acted all shocked that someone would write a song like that about him. Dudes a scrub and everyone knows it, ACB just had the balls to say something about it.

Thats some real talk right there

references shakespeare's comedy 'as you like it' with the "all the world's a stage" part of the song. the song's meaning is pretty obvious.

I think its "it's just what he thinks he hates" instead of "needs". Its reallllly hard to tell, but thats how I've been hearing it. lol.

it is "needs" i copied the lyrics from the lyric booklet.

I have it too, it does say that. but there are other inconsistencies in the music and in the booklet.

in made to pretty (jesushow'dyougetsougly)they have an obvious example of this.

so he could say "hates"

I think this song is pretty much the explanation of why they're breaking up.

Since they are a Christian band, signed to a Christian record label, I think this is a song sang about God:

"If all the world's a stage, then it's not mine,/ 'Cause no eye ever stays on you for long./ Yeah, you're gonna be dethroned,/ You're gonna shed your pride./ Overgrown."

If I know ACB correctly, they really like to bash on humans, in that they acknowledge that we are very selfish, we have big heads, etc. Certain songs include, for example, Made Too Pretty, Into The Sea, '84 Sheepdog, Empire, New Sun, Our World Is Grey, and the list goes on.

I think he's saying, though I'm not so sure about the first verse, that we say we are Christians, though we don't always live through with it, and we don't follow the Bible like we say we do.

Certain examples: You are just in time to move aside... you're gonna be dethroned, you're gonna shed your pride, overgrown. If all the world's a stage then it's not mine, 'cause no eye ever stays on you for long. There's a kid on the cover, and I know that he doesn't believe in the misery that he sings. Yeah, it's just what he thinks he needs.
