'84 Sheepdog Lyrics

They fixed your brain when you were young.
They fixed your brain when you were young.
They fixed your brain, they fixed it...before you knew the difference.

And if the Good Lord's good sheep do their jobs, you would never see they were wolves underneath.
But Good Lord have you ever seen so many teeth marks?
That's right, those containers of light come with a kiss.
But they got quite a bite.

They fixed your brain when you were young.
They fixed your brain when you were young.
Fixed your brain, they fixed it...before you knew the difference.
(Ohhhhh)
They fixed your brain, they fixed it...before you knew the difference.

Come on!

We got our sidewalks.
We got all of our safely lit streets.
We got all of our light tested beliefs.
But when I find love so bright in the alleyway, they throw her overboard, I watch her get lost in the wake.

They fixed your brain when you were young.
They fixed your brain when you were young.
They fixed your brain, they fixed it...before you knew the difference.
(WOAH!!)
They fixed your brain when you were young.
They fixed your brain when you were young.
They fixed your brain, they fixed it...before you knew it.
OH!

its obvious this song is about most of the time, kids being fixed in their ways because of their parents.

But when I find love so bright in the alleyway, they throw her overboard, I watch her get lost in the wake.

i think this verse really explains the song. love doesn't have to be found in a church. Jesus picked the lowest people in status. blind beggers, fishermen, prostitutes. an alley is not the main road.

From the time we were young children, we were taught about how to be a "good Christian". But, the TRUTH is, we learned a watered down, 'safe' version of being a Christian. The truth is that there are 'wolves underneath', basically meaning the teachings of Christ, the TRUTH he presented from the Father, was presented to us in an incorrect way.

For this part: "We got our sidewalks. We got all of our safely lit streets. We got all of our light tested beliefs. But when I find love so bright in the alleyway, they throw her overboard, I watch her get...

Good job on the second verse, it's a hard part to distinguish. I guess we'll know when the album comes out.

Cody laments about how the media, religion, or any other facet of structured society "fixed your brain when you were young" and how these undisputed structures of thought take away the individual's voice and independent thought leaving only a mute and hollow shell of a human being, dependent on the systems that be to provide a substitute for their soul. Many blindly follow these man made structures such as religion believing that they are serving as the "Good Lord's good sheep", but they obliviously act as "wolves" under sheep's clothing. Television serves as a tool for this brainwashing as starting...

I've got some corrections for my own post. haha

"That's right, those containers of light come with a kiss" "We got our sidewalks, we got all of our safely lit streets, we got all of our light tested beliefs. But when I find love so bright in the alleyway, they throw her overboard, I watch her get lost in the wake." (I was WAY off. ha)

I really hope this song is against organized religion. It's how I feel about it. My parents fixed my brain when I was young before I knew the difference by forcing me to go to church and be told how to live my life by a simple man (pastor) who is no closer to being Jesus Christ than I am. But of course I grew up and grew a mind of my own.

why would the song be against organized religion?

you DO realize that As Cities Burn is a CHRISTIAN rock band, right?

@pizza there's no reason they can't be against organized religion and still believe in the Christian God. Organized religion, more often than not, warps Gods word or fixes your brain to believe certain things before you know the difference. (See Norma Jean - Shotgun Message and Organized Beyond Recognition)

though, HAHBASSIST, i'm glad you listen to As Cities Burn. the lessons they teach about religion are essential. most people see God in black and white, either you believe in him and therefore belong to a group of pre-decided beliefs and rituals or you don't believe there is any possibility for...

theenjoisk8r knows what's up

organized beyond recognition...I feel like I wrote that song. ha. that is exactly how I believe

Could the '84 in the title a reference to the novel 1984? Which has themes of child indoctrination, just not into a religion.

Title is from Dumb and Dumber. Harry drove an 84' Sheepdog. Has nothing to do with the song, unless I'm not looking deep enough.

Why can't it be both?

The title is definitely a Dumb and Dumber reference. Its one of Cody's favorite movies and they play quotes from it at all of their shows.

If you rewind past the beginning of this song (on the physical copy, obviously) there's a hidden track. Anyone have the lyrics for that?

it's already on here. it's intro.

It's actually called Gates.

Nevermind that, thought you were referring to something else. Gates is included in the iTunes download however. The dude above me is correct, my apologies :D

Maybe he was born in 84?

'84 Sheepdog is the type of car that the characters Harry and Lloyd drive in the movie Dumb and Dumber. The message of the song deals with the analogy of sheep and wolves.. somehow this was thought of.. pretty clever. Great movie. Great band. R.I.P. A.C.B

It's about a guy who had brain surgery when he was little.

I think this song could be about the brainwashing of religion to government. When they state young I think well we always believe what we're told when we're young in religion and usually in government.
