This One (Crying Like A Child)

I'll start by saying this is one of my favourite Utada songs ever. They lyrics are heart-wrenching, with plenty of whispers in the dark and nods to various people (Freddie Mercury and Simon & Garfunkel) and technology (Blackberry). The chorus is truly heart-breaking to me, and is some of the deepest lyrics Utada has come out with.

Anyway, the song is pretty straight forward. The protagonist has just gone through a break-up, but she is still independent and trying to move on, but she's not fooling anyone because the guy meant everything to her. They may not have known each other too well before getting into the relationship, as per the line "I just wanted you to know the person that I am, More than any other of your fans" (fans possibly meaning other love interests?) The relationship could've possibly ended on bad terms, with the line "Every day and every night your words ring through me".

Then the chorus kicks in with the line "How could I ever love another?"; pretty self-explanatory, she feels she can never share that kind of connection with someone else ever again. "How could you say you don't remember?"; possibly the man is denying their relationship, or special moments spent together? God knows I've give anything for just one more night together"; self-explanatory too, she wants one more night with the man, possibly to get some closure, or for more intimate and sexual reasons. "Today I'll miss you more than ever"; possibly some kind of anniversary or other special occasion? "How could you say you don't remember?"; reiterating the previous line, could link back to ignoring special occasions. "This one's for the happiness I'll be wishing you forever"; she wants the man to be happy no matter what makes him happy.

It's Friday night, and she's out and sees him, surrounded by his "accessories" (women?), "I'll whisper in the darkness 'disappear', sincerely"; she doesn't want to see him in this situation. We get to the bridge and she still feels very much for him, and wants him to marry her, as he is all she needs to be happy.

And she's taking the end badly, as she's crying, looking back at old photos (or possibly ignoring them, they're just taking up space on her computer). "And the crowd is going wild"; possibly meaning the "crowd" (his friends, or other women) are happy to see the guy a free man again. "This is the one, Come on and give it up"; possibly meaning she thinks this is the one person for her, and she hopes he feels the same.

The chorus just reiterates her feelings over and over, that no matter what makes him happy, she wants him to be happy, even if it means they can't be together.

i wonder if she had delaney, bonnie & friends's superstar in mind when she wrote this. i love how she's referenced freddie merc in both her english albums now hahaha

This is nice, definately heart-felt. Lyrics are somewhat cryptic and somewhat not, she is a fan, and talking as a fan as well, about the love she has for a star, love to obsession, to almost a stalker level, really well done.

this song is really catchy. the lyrics are cheesy, funny and cute all at the same time. nice.

What a powerful song! People sometimes fall in love with musicians, authors, etc. This song makes me think that maybe that isn't so crazy. After all artists often reveal a lot about themselves through their work; their art becomes like a window to their thoughts and I can see how you can end up really feeling like you know them personally. I think the human heart just needs to love. Even if you know you could never have a chance with someone, this will not necessarily stop the heart from becoming linked to that person. Yet the person won't even know you exist, you're just a face in their crowd. It's the ultimate unrequited love isn't it?

I love this song. I think its about a guy she went on tour with or a famous person she was crushing on. and got obsessed but the chorus is easy to relate too. My favorite parts were. How can I put this III im an independent woman I.. and How could I ever love another? How could you say you dont remember? Lastly its justa nother friday night for you and your accesesory lights.

She feels like shes being immature, from her crying and heartbreak. she just wanted him to know the real her, more than any of his fans, and shes saying shes sincere.

or its a heart felt song about a guy she fell in love with who she went on tour with, who forgot about her and shes left wondering what happened? and goes to his concert and starts downloading his pictures, and wishing to be with him again.
