I think the lyrics are a bit off, but that's probably because you did it by ear. The second verse I think he sings:
"He pays the bills And he mows the lawn"
Anyways, the song seems pretty straight forward, A wife and mother who takes meds because she's depressed. Her husband just pays the bills and ignores it, and her family wishes she'd just leave them. And I think the last verse where it says "he takes the pills and he moves along" and also "we take these pills and we move along" means more than just taking the meds, but I can't quite put my finger on it. Amazing song
the lyrics are "that brings in the groceries she swears she needs" not "That brings it closer where she swears it needs"
I think that the man in the song is possibly afraid to do anything regarding the females drug use. Her destruction leads him to the same fate that she finds herself in. They are both depressed and lonely and think that things will get better with that next high. Of course things never really get better though.
6th line: not "from ecology," but "pharmacology" and i agree with exile9013 on "groceries" :)
I agree with lostangeles. But the ending part that you can't put your finger on; I think it means that the affects of the forementioned female's drug use affect the male, apparently the husband, so he became depressed and took pills for it and moves along with the rest of his life. The next verse about how "we take these pills" could be refering to a large group of people, the population of drug users, saying that it doesn't matter what the pills do to you. As long as they make you feel better, everything is fine. They just move along, take more pills and it's better.
That's what I think. Anybody care to... Add on to that?
I agree with you guys that the women take pills for a depression. Her husband doesn't care about it, moves along and pays the bills. She stays with him surely because of his money.
For the last verse, I think the "He takes these pills" means that he got depressed and start using medication which could also means drugs or alcohol. Then the "We take these pills" part refer to the many people using anti-depressants, drug or alcohol to get a "better life", meanings that we all do it in a certain kind of way...
i agree with the lyrics being a bit off Um as far as this song, i can relate, so it probably has a diferent meaning to me then the rest of you. to me it means a girl who lived a hard life, just barely scraping by, and in order to make sure she always had the money she needed, she married someone she didnt love. She became miserable, and look pills, which created her own fake "reality". her family grew disgusted, but did nothing about it. i think this song is written from the point of veiw of a man the women falls in love with. the last verse, "we take thes pills" shows that he too needed a fake reality, and so, with drugs, they created their own "perfect" world. i could be wrong, but to my understandind, it makes a lot of sense.
I'm pretty sure this song is just about how people take pills for everything now days, and how it's such a normality in this world today.
on the acoustic version on youtube , he explains the song
When I replace J. with myself this is what I see.
My girlfriend left me and is taking pills (drugs)... her new boytoy is only their to feed her a (bill machine) and he gets sex from it.
It really doesn't matter to me - (you may question why he doesn't care for a loved one) To live in your life and your own routine A product from ecology it seems - (because he is going naturally respect what she wants and not try and control her)
When you're living your life in your own medicated dream How bad could sobriety really be? - (she won't face the truth of reality she needs to alter her mind to escape from leaving him by doing drugs.)
In the end it says "He takes these pills and its better He bobs his head as he moves along" - this guy now falling into descent with her and the drugs and they lose their way eventually.
You see conviction and contempt in the end with
"'Cause it's better"
better for him or I because now she gets what she really deserves. A lesson learned.
