Can't help but listen to this song as a hymn. I'm a Christian, thought I should declare myself. We listen through different ears and can hear notes of Grace where others cannot. Twas ever thus.

The Christian has been loved and chosen by God before ever he or she is born. There is an determined inevitability about his or her coming to faith. They are born to be with God. In history and in eternity.

God's love leaves its mark on every believer. He gives them a new heart, put's his mark upon them spiritually speaking. We are all scarred by sin and only God's forgiving love and grace in Jesus Christ can heal that scar. It is livid, he can make us living.

This echoes Psalm 40. "He put a new song in my mouth, our God to magnify" (40). The Christian is born to sing and declare God's praises. Our hearts desire is to praise God, we have no choice but to lift him up. He is enthroned on the praises of his church. We give him back our voices. "From the womb" I see as a reference to the new birth, or regeneration, being "born again", which takes place when the soul becomes living in faith. This produces a joyful noise, it cannot but. Even those who cannot sing with their voices now sing in their heart to their Creator.

The Christian is justified by faith in Jesus Christ. It's a bit theological but a short explamation is that because of Christ's death on a hill outside Jerusalem 2000 years ago and his resurrection 3 days later in Gods eyes is pardoned, forgiven and it is "just as if I'd" never ever sinned in his sight. Knowing this he or she cannot help but "magnify the Magnificent" for all that he has done for them.

The second verse could have been inspired by the lines, "My soul glorifies the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God, my Savior." Also the lines, "And sing whatever song you wanted me to// I give you back my voice//From the womb my first cry, it was a joyful noise" is similar to Mary's fiat, the annunciation which she called herself the, "Handmaid of the Lord". This song has such a great beat. Adam and Larry really stand out on this album. It's going to be such a fun song to hear live. I like Suede67's thoughts on this being about a muse, that fits well with some of the lyrics. I'm getting a kind of All Because of You vibe from this one, though, my guess is going to be that it's about God.

i have to agree with Charloch on this one... this song is RICH with theological meaning

Leave it to U2 to create such a great song. This is U2 at it's best. U2 is about great music, not flashy musicianship and ego that tends to overcome many musicians. U2 makes music for ordinary people, not musicians or critics, that is why they have been so successful for so long. Anyway, back to the song. For me, I just had a baby girl and I can relate every word to that moment in some way. It was the newborn singing some of the lyrics. (I was born to be with you, in this space and time) The best line: From the womb my first cry, it was a joyful noise. The most amazing sound you will ever here. Put perfectly to music.... Thank you U2, every time I think I have had enough, you bring me right back to the reason I fell in love with you in the first place...
I've heard that Bono's singing to his mother, Iris, in this song. It makes sense, especially if you listen to the first verse.
First and foremost AMAZING!!!!!....Clearly Bono is speaking to his Mother in this song.
"Only love, only love can leave such a mark" He is speaking of the incredible love between a Mother and her child "But only love, only love can heal such a scar" Here he is saying that the only thing that can heal the scar that he has from the death of his mother is the love he still feels for and from her.

i dont think its about his mother but his father, i say this because bono's dad bob was a tenor with an amazing singing abiltiy and bono is sayin that the love that he had for his father made him (bono) want to sing to make his father proud by following in his footsteps and since he was born and bono inherited his fathers voice he always wanted to sing for his dad, he'd "sing whatever song, you (bob) wanted me(bono) to" bono says, "I'll giv u back my voice to lift u up" this must mean that because...
