The way i interpreted it, i think its the mothers point of view in the song, the one the younger woman goes to visit,
I think the younger woman left when her son died, but then she had to come back to say goodbye to her father who passed away later on, thats why he asks the boy whats it like, cause hes been there, also why she asks her father to pass on the message to her son.
