Central Lyrics

I’m central to nowhere
Thinking of sweeping it clean
When we choose to go we’re losing more than just our surroundings
I’ve gone around the sides of this universe as it stands
Outside the limits of all existence
Where light never ends

We should be grateful to the gods
Whoever they’re real to they are
I value my placement as in Hell
Remember that moment that I fell, hey hey hey.

Anything that could one day be is as real as what I’m saying
If something is nothing, it must not be something in any possible way
Lo-lo-lo-lose yourself in the far off worlds that are right under your feet
Switch below with above all the way up into infinity

We should be thankful who we are
Whether we know ourselves or not
Walking alongside myself
Neither of us listens very well

I’m dreading a time that is not near
As a man on cross I have no fear
I can’t believe these words I’m saying
You gotta feel your lines
You gotta feel your lines

(repeat...)

I’m dreading a time that is not near
As a man on cross I do not fear
I can’t believe these words I’m saying
You gotta feel your lines
You gotta feel your lines

Every song does not have a grand statment, and at the same it time every song is a grand statement. I take this simply to mean that life and people change always so there there is no center. Calling yourself one thing denies yourself the possibility of being anything outside of that.

Then you have the relation to traveling the universe. As you've probably heard and just brushed off before, "We are the center of the universe". WE ARE NOT! We are a changing part of the universe.

That is what he says in the "thesis" or opening. He then goes on to say how people are and that he is afraid of that.

PEOPLE ARE NOT THOSE WHO SEE THEMSELVES FROM THE OUTSIDE (OR IN 3RD PERSON). THAT IS HOW WE BECAME CENTRALIZED/LABELERS/PUNKS/SOPHISTACATED/RICH/POOR/HICKS/SPICKS/WHATEVER YOU CALL YOURSELF.

YOUR ARE YOU AND THAT MAY CHANGE BUT WHATEVER THAT IS NOW EMBRACE IT TO ITS FULLEST.

LIVING AS THOUGH YOU HAVE ALREADY DIED WILL ULTIMATLEY FREE YOU, JUST AS BUDDHISM AND CHRISTIANITY AND MANY OTHER RELIGIONS HAVE BELIEVED FOR MANY MANY CENTURIES.

I like the passion.... although the word after hicks, could be conceived as racist. Love this song, this whole album. Just sayin...

@tsortore Hello, enlightened being. Or, I should/will say, lightning being. Such a striken heart with awakening.. is what you iv given me. Blessed be your tracks.. (:-)

I totally love how he plays with your feelings in this song. Maybe its just my perception, but at the time when he repeats this "...dreading a time that is not near as a man on a cross i have no fear..." - you first get led by the constant synth tone. When the violins get louder and the other instruments are quite, you feel pure emptiness, and for me, it feels like your soul gets pulled out of your body and get led by the music. When the hard synth (dont know how to describe it) begins you feel pure fear. Then the drumset comes in from some kind of corner, and you get more comfortable, and when the whole instruments came back, you feel very relieved. Sorry, I think im to crazy for this :D

No you're NOT crazy for feeling like this. I felt "pure fear" too and still do when that part starts. It is the emptiness, nothing is scarier to me than a sense of true spiritual aloneness, has only happened 4 times in my life. Terrifying. I never thought lessening of the fear level being due to the instrumental changes (I have NO musical background, all my creativity is "spent" in the dimension of colors and shapes..I'm a painter..lol..this is off point but I used to feel so left out when John talked about that dimension of vibrations, cause all I...

@Empyrean91 this is a great comment and I had to listen to this song again after i read it :-)

i think the simple answer to this song is questioning whether or not God exists.

and i gotta say this is probably the best song off the album

If something is nothing it must not be something in any possible way points out the paradox that is nothingness. Nothing doesn't exist because just assigning it the term 'nothing' makes it something. But at the same time you can't say it doesn't exist because we try to explain things that are un-designatable with designatable terms like 'it is nothing' or 'it doesn't exist. I know it sounds like bull but once you apply some philosophy you can understand it. That's my two cents anyway...

Also, I think 'central' perfectly describes the concepts in this song, when presented with two sides like below and above, you realize that they are one in the same and you are central to the two sides. Something can be right below my feet but at the same time be far off because of the relativity we put on it. Anything that could one day be is as real as what i'm saying is pretty simple, time doesn't really exist and just because something exists on the physical plane doesn't make it any more 'real' than something in someone's head....

This is probably my favourite John Frusciante song, not an easy choice however. In particular love the line 'if something is nothing it must not be something in any possible way' and of course the last line. I think it's just about seeing the universe in its true form, how everything is interconnected and stuff. I get a really ambient feeling from John Frusciante's music. I remember seeing an interview of him and he's talking about Kurt Cobain's scream, and how it must feel to have that sound coming through you. That's exactly what i think when i hear John's scream at the end of the song and just how it works with the solo and everything. God damn i love this song.

emasame, I don't think that is the question but I can sort of understand where you come back. John has symbolically related himself to Jesus before (as a man who lived, died, and was reborn) and acknowledges on "God" that God exists (though he is taking a first person point of view, but also has another symbolic comparison to Jesus and also just being a regular human)

I believe the real meaning of the song is questioning how things have come to be, why things exist, why things don't exist, and what is the threshold of nothingness.

Some nice comments about this awesome song already, and I don't want to just repeat what you all have said, so i'll just say - What amazing guitar work by the 2 Johns (Frusciante and Marr)

You have to view it in the context of the album and, of course, if you want to know what John was thinking when he wrote these lyrics, you can read his blog which says that this song is about rebirth.

Otherwise, I came on here to say that this song immediately enters my all-time top favorites.

this song comes immediately off of enough of me which is a song about death.. this song symbolizes the transformation that takes place shaping the individual who has made the change of a negative personality trait...
