I think this is a dialogue between one (Light) and ones ego (Dark).

First bit, taking advice from your ego as to what to do, where does it get (us)?

Second, the ego is selfish and needs to be fulfilled, it creates highs or happiness.

Third, the ego is responsible for lows and negative emotions too, to contrast with highs. Perpetuating the cycle to seek highs. It's common to believe that fate is responsible, drawing attention away from the ego itself.

Will we ever get together in a song - will the ego and being be able to co-exist, without the being being suffocated by the ego Will you ever tell everybody bout right and wrong - the ego is always right, whether you realise it or not. Even when you think it's wrong, your ego is doing the thinking :) Will you ever let anyone one on in the meaning of life and death - as alluded to in other tracks - dying before you die is to be born Do you need me or are you waiting for my last breath - your ego dies when you're at deaths door, your being finally shines though. Do you need me ego? or are you waiting till I have no time left?

Another amazing song by Mr. Frusciante. The lines...

...get me on the verge of tears every time I hear them.

It's about leaving his drug addiction and drug live behind.

After I got the album, this was the first song (besides Unreachable, because I had already downloaded that one from the internet) that I chose to listen to over of the rest, based on the beginning. The choir singing, is stunning and I really jammed out to it the first time I heard it.

As far as the meaning behind the lyrics go, I interpreted this one as a love letter, type song. It almost seems like a love letter, to an ex-lover, like he wants her back.

Because, for one, throughout the lyrical part of this song, he says "you" quite a few times, as if to be speaking to a lover.

And then, "Did you ever notice, That it's for you that I've lived my life, Every time I had fun you were on my mind." I thought that part was pretty obvious.

And when he goes on to say "I've lost my perspective, I've gone off the wall. Really not really sure if I'm needed here at all." and I understood this to mean, that he's lost it now that she's gone...and he doesn't feel needed anymore.

And then he proceeds to say; "I was made to think that we would wind up round here." Meaning, maybe that he had a bad feeling about the relationship from the beginning despite his love for her?

And I thought that the last section was easily self explanitory..

So anyway, that's one way I interpreted this one. However, at the same time I disagree with myself because a love song seems somewhat out of place in this record. (In contrast with the rest of the songs) But hey, who knows..

I think it could be him talking to god.

It seems like he is asking questions only god knows and if god is going to tell all the humans the answers. Just my interpretation of that part. This whole album is amazing! So psychedelic!

This is not a love song .. this song speaks to the questioning of god that everyone experiences.. it shows a struggle between man and god.

The Empyrean is a concept album, meaning it tells one story through all the songs, Frusciante described it as being a story taking place within a persons mind, the only other character being someone who does not live in a physical world, but is inside it, in the sense that he exists in peoples minds. That person could be interpreted as God.

I think it could be a talk between the Dark and Light. Maybe the first and third stanza the Dark is speaking, and the second is by Light. It could be also about John himself, or the Good and Evil.
