Wow, I'm surprised nobody's commented on this song. It's one of my favorite on the album, probably because I knwo the feeling. To me he's talking about odviously dealing with something, wether it be depression, or just something else that really effected him. But he wants someone to be there to listen to and comfort him, but there's nobody there. Sleep is his only chance for relief, but even that is failing him.
I'm assuming he wrote the lyrics? If that's the case, I think this is a religious song. I'm a mormon like David, and this sounds a lot like a talk one would hear in church or something the missionaries would say to an investigator. The only difference is there is no mention of God as the "peace to your soul". So IN MY HUMBLE OPINION, so please don't get offended if I say this, it sounds like he is speaking to the people who aren't members of the church who feel lost and without hope. It's his little way of doing missionary work. But he can't mention God, Christ, or the church in the song because some people get mad when people do that sort of thing.
ohmygosh im a mormon too! i thought that maybe this song was about an investigator maybe realizing he needs the church. because through the song it says "you want somebody, just anybody, to lay their hands on your soul tonight" and then he talks about knowing things have gotta change, and finally "you want somebody, just anybody, to bring some peace to your soul tonight"
