She was lost in so many different ways
Out in the darkness with no guide
I know the cost of a losing hand
Never thought the grace of God go high
I found heaven on earth
You were my last, my first
And then here this voice inside
Ave Maria
I've been alone
When I'm surrounded by friends
How could the silence be so loud
But I still go home knowing that I've got you
There's us when the lights go down
You are my heaven on earth
You are my hunger, my thirst
I always hear this voice inside
Singing Ave Maria
Sometimes love can come and pass you by
While your busy making plans
Suddenly hit you and then you realize
It's out of your hands, baby you got to understand
You are my heaven on earth
You are my last, my first
And then I hear this voice inside
Ave Maria

Im thinking of having this as my first dance at my wedding. I dont think it is about loss or lonelyness at all.
It is about mixing faith with love and knowing that no matter how lost you are you will have your faith and the love of the person in your life.
It is about the sublimity of love and the feeling you have when you realise you have (above all costs) found the one person you want to spend the rest of your life with.

This song is about a lost girl going through life without the realization of how love can change her life. When she found it, it became her everything. Her heaven on Earth. Her last, her first. Basically she is thanking God for bringing her this love in her darkest moment. She is saying that she was so unfamiliar with that kind of love that she didn't know how to react / respond to it but faith kept pursuing it. This song is about a religious love. Something so holy and pure that its embodied into her. He is her hunger and her thirst. This song is about nonrefundable love.
i have no idea what ave maria comes from but i think this song is about being saved by someone you love
Ave Maria is Latin for Hail Mary. This song is more religious than anything...but it can most certainly be applied to actual love on earth.

I love that part of the song! So true I think this song is both religious and about 'love on earth'
Its almost like the relationship taking place is so unearthly and beautiful that it is glorifying to the Lord, thus, hailing Mary, "Ava Maria." It is such a beautiful concept that shes definitley grasped. Do you agree?
@kookeedoh i've always longed for that kind of love.. i just love the way you put it!...

this song is so real to me
just the last line of the first verse "there but for the grace of god go i"
and the last line of the second verse "theres only us..."
this is a beautiful song
Unlike "Halo", this song can be about a religious experience (then again the word "baby" is used). "Ave Maria" is basically "Hail Mary" and the prayer "Hail Mary" is sung as a church song in an operatic style. Beyonce's opera-like vocals in this song are amazing. The song's narrator is basically praying for love since she appears lonely and all love seems to pass her by (mainly romantic love but it can be any kind of love really). The song is definitely set in a female's point of view.
@storypwner14 'baby' is used generally to us audience, probably!!

In the second verse, it should be
"And then I hear this voice inside"
not
"And then here this voice inside"
I think it was right the first time; however, there was not proper use of puncuation. I think it should be:

I think this creates the imagery of putting her hand on her heart which, accordingly, creates depth of lyrics. I think this is also elusive to our bodies being a temple of God; He speaks within us - and to our hearts.
