Citizen of the Planet Lyrics
I start up in the north
I grow from a special seed
I sprinkle it with sensibility
From French and Hungarian snow
I linger in the sprouting
Until my engine’s full
Then I move across the sea
To European bliss
To language of poets
As I cut the cord of home
I kiss my mother’s mother
Look to the horizon
Wide eyed, new ground
Humbled by my new surroundings
I am a citizen of the planet
My president is Kwan Yin
My frontier is on an airplane
My prisons, homes for rehabilitating
Then I fly back to my rest
I fly back with my nuclear
But everything is different
So I wait
My yearn for home is broadened
Patriotism expanded
By callings from beyond
So I pack my things
Nothing precious
All things sacred
I am a citizen of the planet
My laws are all of attraction
My punishments are consequences
Separating from source the original sin
I am a citizen of the planet
Democracy’s kids are sovereign
Where the teachers are the sages
And pedestals filled with every parent
And so the next few years are blurry
The next decade’s a flurry
Of smells and tastes unknown
Threads sewn straight through this fabric
Through fields of every color
One culture to another
And I come alive
And I get giddy
And I am taken and globally naturalized
I am a citizen of the planet
From simple roots through high vision
I am guarded by the angels
And my body guides the direction I go in
I am a citizen of the planet
My favorite pastime edge stretching
Besotten with human condition
These ideals are born from my deepest within
I grow from a special seed
I sprinkle it with sensibility
From French and Hungarian snow
I linger in the sprouting
Until my engine’s full
To European bliss
To language of poets
As I cut the cord of home

This is one of my favourites on Flavors.. a few typos in this submission (words that aren't actually in the song.) Alanis' style is definitely present in this song! Reminds me very much of Thank U, it has that global and spiritual feel to it.
I think the line "Patriotism expanded..." began with her becoming an American citizen. ;-) Her feelings about that, about the two nations Canada and America and her (possibly buddistic) view of the rest of the world and her place in it.
Aaah!! I love the lyrics!
Wow, I'm only the second one. (Why?) I'm not really sure what the lyrics are on about, but they're original, as is the song.
Toward the end there, I could have sworn she was saying "etcha-sketching." Whoops, my bad!
this song is awesome. The gutiar in thr chorus is sick! Alanis Morisstte is amazing! I'm not that sure what the song is about, but I think it has something to do with being is someplace new and unknown to you. Something like that.
this song is about being living in the world, considering the world as one large cxountry with no barriers between countries or humans. im pretty surprised no one knew what the song is about, this song is gold!
My frontier is on an airplane: theres no such thing as limits between countries and humans, all the planet belongs to all of us tod o whatever we feel like doing and love each other
And so, the next few years are blurry, the next decade's a flurry of smells and tastes unknown: getting old
I come alive and I get giddy I am taken and globally naturalized: dying
what a human being! what words, speaking of death with being "Globally Naturalized"
this song's lyrics just give me killing chills Thank you Alanis!
From my point of view, this is about feeling a deep connection with the world we live in, a higher state of awareness, where you understand every little thing and understand the connection between every living being on this planet, and where you really feel like you're a part of the greater whole that is Earth.
If anyone is interested in this kind of spiritual awareness, I highly recommend you read Eckhart Tolle's "A New Earth - Awakening to the purpose of your life".
i love this album! i agree with the above about how its about living in the world but i also think it is about her journy in life as a whole. like "i start up in the north" she lived in canada. "sprinkle it with sensibility from french and hungarian snow" her parents are french and hungarian. so they are teaching her things... sensibility i guess :) then she moves to europe. and what not... eventually becomes more spiritual. "i fly back to my nest....... every thing is different" she comes back home but she is a different person. so anyways she tells the story of her life in my opinion. my favorite line in this song is "seperating from scource the original sin" like how she used to be catholic... now shes.... "post catholic" as she says... god i love her!!!!!
If Buddha (or Jesus) came back as a sometimes geeky, sometimes hyper-mature Canadian girl, how many would recognize him? Evidently, very few. "Patriotism expanded... By callings from beyond." "My laws are all of attraction. My punishments are consequences." Read Krishnamurti and Ram Dass, I guess. (Who would get =her= if they didn't understand where she =came= from?)
I think the line "Patriotism expanded..." began with her becoming an American citizen. ;-) Her feelings about that, about the two nations Canada and America and her (possibly buddistic) view of the rest of the world and her place in it.
