Charlie Don't Surf Lyrics
I called the house to see if anyone was home
Question the silcences the negative response
Stayed to see the sunrise
raising hell upon the square
Didn't loose the sense of promise
Laced upon the air
Ruined by the lack of anything to use
Of knowing what to say and what to lock away
Pay attention for detentions here to stay
And it took so long to find
All the answers through the lies
And it's been so long
That I don't know if it's alright
Problematic interest never fails to impress
Score cards for everyone
You wear them out to dress
Badge of honour true to code and true to form
Buried underneath all these expectations
If there could be any kind of picutre
That I could paint for you
I bet you any money that the numbers
Wouldn't stick for all I know
I'll take some credit for myself if I can
And walk away from this
Whole scene a happier man
And it took so long to find
All the answers through the lies
And it's been so long
That I don't know if it's alright
It's alright
It's alright
It's alright
It's alright
It's alright
And it took so long to wait until the end

Pretty sweet song. It kind of reminds me of Drive.
The questioning of God's existence seems like a theme that reiterates throughout this album. The chorus shows his unsureness on whether basing your life around something/someone that may not exist isn't the way to go. The reference to 'score cards' may be a way of portraying His judgment of us.
The last line "It took so long to wait until the end" pretty much seals the deal in how no one ever truly will know if He exists until they die.
Great song and great album. Matt has such a way with words and his ability to write deeper, more existential lyrics show how talented these guys are.
Great song, although its a bit diffrent for FFAF considering they were suppost to be making this new album sound like Casually dressed.
I don't have a clue what the song is about really so have fun working it out haha
Here the correct lyrics: I called the house to see if anyone was home Question the silcencesthe negative response Stayed to see the sunrise Didn't loose the sense of promise Laced upon the curve Ruined by the lack of anything to use Of knowing what to say and what to lock away Pay attention for detentions here to stay

straight from their album :)
A really lovely song. I won't even attempt to try and understand this song. It goes beyond needing to be in my opinion.
I think the title for this song is a Numb3rs reference-there is an episode of the same name, and possibly the lyrics are related to that.
from wikipedia: "Charlie Don't Surf is a famous line from the film Apocalypse Now, spoken by Colonel Kilgore as justification for taking a beach at the Mekong Delta so the American soldiers could go surfing."
wrong lyrics.
I called the house to see if anyone was home Questioned the silences, the negative response Stayed to see the sunrise raising hell upon the square Didn't lose the sense of promise Laced upon the air. Education was a simple learning curve Ruined by the lack of anything to use Of knowing what to say and what to lock away Pay attention for detention is here to stay
And it took so long to find All the answers through the lies And it's been so long That I don't know if it's alright

sounds like the idea of the loss of faith.
the first few lines sound like him praying to god and receiving no response. however he still had hope as things got worse and worse. as the song progresses it reveals the characters loss of faith and unanswered questions.
i like the idea of questiong existance, and it seems it would probably be what they were trying to get across.
although i had a different interpretation before i read those. i first heard this song shuffling through funeral for a friend in my maths class, and it seemed to me that the song had alot of relevancy to education.
firstly i thought the title may have been a reference to how kids and teenagers now are expected to give up pretty much all their time for education. and that 'charlie don't surf' could be meaning that the subject being sung about wants to spend his own time surfing (which could be his hobby) and he is in a situation where he can't do what he wants too. 'pay attention for detention's here to stay' hit me as kids today having to adhere to silly numbers of rules and regulations. and are expected to know pretty much everything. and that instead he's more interested in his hobby and as such is getting detentions (maybe for not completing homework) i also thought that the line 'and it took so long to find all the answers through the lies' i interpreted as: although school may give you an education. it doesn't teach you how to be a good person. and how he's had to figure life out for himself, and all school did was hinder him.
that's just my opinion. i see how it ties in with faith though :)
