Skipalong Lyrics

So tired of feeling blue
Such a heavy weight on you
So shake it off and make your way to somewhere different, to somewhere different
Oh, now you're leaving me oh what will you do
All alone in the big bad world but I'm not worried, no

'Cause you're gonna skip along
Quite merrily, baby, you're gonna revel in hating what's going on
And you're like a sugar bomb
And no harm will come, no harm will come if you just skip along.

Acting oblivious
Comes natural to us
Keep smiling knowing all the while the world will fall apart, the world will fall apart

Wouldn't it be lovely to be home, home
Safe and sound with no one 'round to bring us down
But that's so far away...

My favourite song on the self titled album!

It starts off in a very somber mood but builds up to this vibrant feeling.

I love the tune and its odd cheerful, somber feel to it even though it doesn't necessarily mean, at least to me, not a very overly-cheerful song, lyrics wise. :P

I feel like its about things not working out and they decide to take the easy way out - They become oblivious to the real problems that surround them and run away from it. They are happy to continue to skipalong because they don't want to be weighed down nor feel bad about the situation even if things are falling a part around them.

On the other side of the fence the viewpoint of the other half/person could sees this as a cop out but in the end decides that they don't want to feel that burden all the time either as we all want happiness - as you can hear from the lyrics that things are turned from "You" to "I".

You can't always have things go right for you and its hard when the comforts of 'home' are so far away.

The song slows down at the end with the 'la di da' wispy feel of it all.. false happiness, perhaps? Is it better to lie to yourself?

My Interpretation

yess i agree with you. but it also means that she wont stick around, throughout the song she sings this message almost: "leave the rest of the world, save yourself" youre like a sugar bomb means that you dont take sides and youre a friend to everyone no matter how much you hate them. which leads to "no harm will come if you just skipalong" meaning that you go with the flow and nothing goes wrong.

"revel in hating whats going on" - shes hating, but not showing it. she just skips along and achieves her...

Lyric Correction
Cover art for Skipalong lyrics by Lenka

To me this song sounds like a reference to the process of healing the inner child. In the lyrics I hear a lot of affirmation, re-integration, and re-parenting. Telling the younger self the words of comfort they needed to hear when they were younger.

The song offers affirmation to the inner child that they are perfect as they are ex: “And you're like a sugar bomb” a reference to the innocence and vulnerability of being a child. It offers re-assurance of finding safety in whatever coping mechanisms you chose as a child such as ‘skipping along/dissociating’ ex: “And no harm will come, no harm will come if you just skip along.”

And ultimately setting the inner child free to reintegrate back into the self whole also knowing that the past cannot be changed and being proud of your younger self for finding ways to cope and survive: “Oh, now you're leaving me oh what will you do All alone in the big bad world but I'm not worried, no ‘Cause you're gonna skip along”

Like a thank you and love letter to the younger self for helping you get through
