One of these days the sky's gonna break
And everything will escape, and I'll know
One of these days the mountains are gonna fall
Into the sea, and they'll know

That you and I were made for this
I was made to taste your kiss
We were made to never fall away
Never fall away

One of these days letters are gonna fall
From the sky telling us all to go free
But until that day I'll find a way to let everybody know
That you're coming back, you're coming back for me

'Cause even though you left me here
I have nothing left to fear
These are only walls that hold me here
Hold me here
Hold me here
Hold me here
The only walls that hold me here

One day soon I'll hold you like the sun holds the moon
And we will hear those planes overhead
And we won't have to be scared
'Cause we won't have to be, yeah
Oh 'cause we won't have to be yeah, scared no oh

You're coming back for me
You're coming back for me

You're coming back for me

You're coming back for me
You're coming back for me

You're coming back for me

You're coming back for me
You're coming back for me

You're coming back for me

You're coming back for me
You're coming back to me

You're coming back for me, yeah

You're coming back for me
You're coming back for me

You're coming back for me

You're coming back for me
You're coming back to me

You're coming back to me

You're coming back for me
You're coming back

i think its about how someone's died and left a loved one behind. "and they'll know you and i were made for this i was made to taste your kiss we were made to never fall away" they are saying oneday they are gonna see that person again. they were meant for each other, to neverfall away from the other person

I absolutely LOVE this song, it's so great. I think it's about someone's boyfriend/girlfriend dying, and the person is saying that even though they're dead, one day they'll die too. And then they'll be together again and everything will be perfect.

I heard it on Harper's Island. R.I.P Chloe and Cal. Two of my three favorite people on that show, and one of the cutest TV couples.

In my eyes this song has christian undertones. Kinda sounds like the returning of jesus christ.

    My Interpretation

This love song can be religious or secular. I think of 9-11, with the planes overhead, and the letters falling from the sky (all that paper). And all the fears we humans can have, for good reason. Think of all the natural disasters that happen on this planet: earthquakes, tornadoes, avalanches, landslides, floods, fires, tsunamis. Sometimes it feels like the world could just break apart. But even with those material things breaking apart, as huge as they are and as devastating, true love remains strong. Love survives. It is immaterial. We can't touch it but we know it's there. We can explain love by religion, or some people are OK not understanding why love survives. Hope feeds people regardless of religious beliefs. We dream of being united with someone we love. We have hopes and we have fears. Think of the letters sent in bottles in the ocean. The Word makes things real. We know the words of this song are pure poetry. They make us think and feel from our own perspective in life. There is no one right answer or interpretation. That is what great art is supposed to do for us.

"With its eerie, Thom Yorke/Jeff Buckley-like falsetto and sense of romantic doom, "Letters From The Sky" oozes with sensuality. "That's just a desperate, delusional love song," says Steven."

This song makes me think of a person whose loved one is away at war, mainly because of the line "one of these days letters are gonna fall from the sky, telling us all to go free". It's not uncommon for the U.S. military to dump mass quantities of leaflets in areas that are going to be bombed, so that innocent civilians can escape before the attack. Also, after the invasion of Iraq and subsequent fall of Saddam Hussein, the U.S. military dropped leaflets in Arabic telling the people that they were free from dictatorship... hence "telling us all to go free."

Also, the line "one of these days the mountains are gonna fall into the sea" puts it in an almost religious context for me, because of Psalm 46:2 - "Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea."

Regardless of what it means, it's a beautiful, powerful song that I can listen to on repeat for hours!

everyone keeps relating to meaning to either war, religion, or love. maybe it is all three.. love can very often be like war and so on.

Obvious Biblical reference to Psalm 46:2 "Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea" (NIV).

    My Opinion

I didn't read through a lot of peoples ideas, but I did notice a lot of "religious" tones. Too some extent I agree. I think it's kinda simple..

One of these days the sky's gonna break And everything will escape and I'll know One of these days the mountains Are gonna fall into the sea and they'll know

Hes saying one day the world will come to an end.

That you and I were made for this I was made to taste your kiss We were made to never fall away Never fall away One of these days letters are gonna fall From the sky telling us all to go free But until that day I'll find a way To let everybody know that you're coming back You're coming back for me

Hes found his perfect love, and she died. The boundaries of the earth couldn't keep them separate, whether he dies and joins her, or she is reincarnated and joins him in life again. He will find her again, damn it! :D

Just my simple take on it!

Someone they loved has died and they'll see them again one day when they die.

Could also be saying they'll commit suicide so they can be together again. That's what I got from it.

Both as a standalone and as part of the DSOTS album, you can take this lyric as read. As a matter of public record, Jourgensen's drug intake was legendary even in the 1980s. By the late 90s, in his own words, he was grappling with massive addiction issues and had lost almost everything: friends, spouse, money and had nearly died more than once. "Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; and this song is a message to his fans & friends saying he knows it. It's painful to listen to so I'm glad the "Keith Richards of industrial metals" wised up and cleaned up. Well done sir.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
