Carl Solomon Blues Lyrics
Backwash districts sprung from Ra's bright hips
Reduced to silkscreen hand job new car ego trips
And it's just endless combinations of the same old shit
Sloshing back and forth across some continents
All that talking it ain't got no use when it's just mal digestion that's been haunting you
Along with reflux opinions from your ulcer moods
You're just a litany of horrors like the evening news
But off somewhere in a New York flat, benzedrine derailed rants of immeasurable frenetic praise
That cauterize before they save
All the truth now in how you're lying there
Shoulder bladed nightmare rug pulled from your feet
All the truth now in how you're lying there in
Angelheaded elsewhere so markedly meek
Slapped like a has been by syntactic gods
Whom which then help you find your glasses but not your lower jaw
And you don't want to look surprised but you're in constant ahhh!
Ain't no fig leaf big enough to hide your dicktion flaws now
Teeming pools of alphabetic shame that spit out
Infinitely indolent verbs across your page
Who dig their claws instantly into some nouns legs
If once your manuscript just limped now it's become quite lame
But off somewhere in a New York flat, they don't deal with things like that
Just immeasurable frenetic praise that cauterizes as it saves
All the truth now in how you're lying there
Shoulder bladed nightmare rug pulled from your feet
All the truth now in how you're lying there in
Angelheaded elsewhere so markedly meek
All the truth now in how you're lying there

Angelheaded elsewhere for the past six weeks

It's Cal, not Carl.
no..its carl
even though the track itself says "Cal," for unknown reasons, on the back of the album cover the track is listed as "Carl Solomon Blues."
why does no one talk more about what and who this song is about?
google Carl Solomon!!!
Ok, I'd agree the name of the song is in fact, Carl Solomon Blues. As for the Origin and per Wikipedia, when Allen Ginsberg wrote HOWL, "the primary emotional drive was his sympathy for Carl Solomon; he met Solomon in a mental institution and became friends with him" Considering the song uses morose language such as, "You're just a litany of horrors like the evening news" and "haunting you," the song most likely is a re-imagining of Ginsberg's poem. "ashcan rantings and kind king light of mind, who chained themselves to subways for the endless ride from Battery to holy Bronx on benzedrine until the noise of wheels and children brought them down shuddering mouth-wracked and battered bleak of brain all drained of brilliance in the drear light of Zoo"
"Bronx" from the poem (line 3) corrosponds to D&THL's line, "But off somewhere in a New York flat"
and
"angelheaded hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly..." also from HOWL corresponds to D&THL's "Angel headed elsewhere for the past six weeks" and "Angel headed elsewhere so markedly meek" because they all begin with the word angelheaded, which I'm not even sure of the meaning of the word, much less it's use. It turns out Ginsberg was a homosexual, just like most beat writers of the time. Perhaps angelheaded hipsters were a subgroup of junkies that Ginsberg and/or Carl Solomon were/was apart of. Ginsberg was a non-addict, although enchanted by the beautifully doomed or popular/attractive drug addicts. If Solomon and Ginsberg met in a psych institution, Carl would've prob been the Angelheaded hipster that is the subject of the poem and the song.
As for the bottom line meaning of the song, Ian Metzger impersonates Ginsberg as he essentially describes the horror of the lifestyle that Carl Solomon may have suffered. Benzedrine is a type of amphetamine that brings the user into a euphoric state (D&THL's "And you don't want to look surprised but you're in constant ahhh!) while diminishing a sense of appetite (D&THL's "Shoulder bladed nightmare rug pulled from your feet"). In my opinion, while Ginsberg sympathized for his generation of beat writers, he also could realize their trademark use of drugs, wild and promiscuous sexual habits, and hippy nature would lead to their downfall.
Word to D&THL, good homework, but do you have any thoughts of your own? I'm not the biggest fan, but I your other songs aren't recreations of existing poems. The beat is great and the strung out vocals match the lyrics and the anxious beat.
I'm BANZR and you've been BANZED!
i think the writer of this band is a reincarnation of that crazy guy from the nineteen twenties.. I would even go on to say the album is supposed to be understood in the context of the 1920s.
come on guys...

this song is about Ian's self-loathing of his lyric writing.

basically he read a poem that made him feel less confidant about his songwriting ability and this was written to reflect his feeling on this issue.

examples of some of his lyrics and stating that they all seem the same to him, useless.

either he's talking about people writing lyrics in general or talking about how they stay with him (in his head)as he travels, but i doubt either are correct writing these lyrics is pointless when your reasons for being upset are trivial and he gets into weird moods and writes down lyrics that reflect them
"You're just a litany of horrors like the evening news
you're just depressing...
does anyone else care to add the rest?
yeah idk about that
yeah idk about that
i love the wordplay of this song. : )
This song really makes me want to go re-read On The Road/everything else from the Beat generation era
It is "constant awe", not "constant ahhhh"
i seriously think a lot of this song is about him criticizing some girl who's probably a rich, stuck-up ho for lack of a better word. the "silkscreen hand job new car ego trips" part pretty much describes some girl giving some seemingly rich gentleman a handjob.
then this part,
All the truth now in how you're lying there Shoulder bladed nightmare rug pulled from your feet All the truth now in how you're lying there in Angelheaded elsewhere so markedly meek
so she puts on a front by acting like she's intelligent or decent or moral, but he's saying "the truth" or who she really is when she's lying with the "rug pulled from her feet" and i mean when the rug gets pulled from your feet you end up on your back, so he's saying you're on your back a lot, skank, and that's the truth about you as a person. "Angelheaded elsewhere so markedly meek" means when she's not slutting around she's pretending to be a perfect little angel, and the markedly meek part i think is just him sarcastically mocking the front she's putting on.
then
Slapped like a has been by syntactic gods Whom which then help you find your glasses but not your lower jaw And you don't want to look surprised but you're in constant ahhh! Ain't no fig leaf big enough to hide your dicktion flaws now
so she gets slapped like some ho in a weird porno or something (probably somewhat frequently) by a bunch of different guys who are "syntactic gods" which means they basically have hooking up with random sluts down to an easy step-by-step process. And then the next part is talking about her giving a bj, when you look surprised you have your mouth open, and she's in constant "awe" which is also a mouth open type of emotion, and to say that it's constant means it happens quite a lot
anyway there's a lot more to this song obviously, i just dont feel like trying to analyze any more of it
and to be clear i didnt mean she was actually in a porno
