Devil Dressed in Blue Lyrics
Well I believe the closing scene
Is being told so close to me
I'm having trouble getting sleep
The devil dressed in blue
Well after all the enemies
Staring back inside of me
I wrote a tune so it seems
That convinced me to always sing
Well I am but a kitchen sink
The place to make the others clean
But you keep coming back to me
I've never felt so old
A dirty word, a venom seeps
A happy man, a fish to keep
As long as i can think
I really think I need to think
Angel wrestle me
Crack my sides to let me see
That if the end will set me free
They're sending me down below
Well I can feel the wooden hair
Creeping out your cross to bear
I never knew you actually cared
I'm such a simple fool
Well seventy months out at sea
I hope that you still think of me
As Jesus knows that I still think
About the way you murdered me
Seven demons out at sea
I hope that you still think of me
As Jesus knows that I still think
About the way you murdered me
Angel wrestle me
Crack my sides to let me see
That if the end will set me free
They're sending me down below
Well I can feel your wooden chair
Creeping out my cross to bear
I never knew you actually cared
I'm such a simple fool
Is being told so close to me
I'm having trouble getting sleep
The devil dressed in blue
Staring back inside of me
I wrote a tune so it seems
That convinced me to always sing
The place to make the others clean
But you keep coming back to me
I've never felt so old

this song explains my life. i never understand when someone loves me either. why would anyone actually care? but any ways andy hull is genius and the melody and everything about this song just pulls my heart to pieces.
It sounds more like "That if the end will set me free"
I'm pretty sure it's "animals" as the next line starts with "they're."
I agree with the first comment, I don't hear "they're" in the second line. to me it sounds like "That if the end will set me free/or send me down below" and the first verse after the chorus sounds like "Seven days now out at sea"
i kinda thought it was seventy knots out at sea. thats what it sounds like to me at least

I'd say this is the "right ahead young sailor" of the eventually home.i could listen to this 50 times and it not get old.

I think that the song is about religion. especially in the first stanza where he says "Well I believe the closing scene Is being told so close to me I'm having trouble getting sleep" he's talking about the after-life being the 'closing scene' and he's scared because he doesn't know if he'll go to heaven or hell and cannot sleep, "the closing scene.....i'm having trouble getting sleep." the fourth stanza aids to the religious aspect of the song and how he's scared of his location in the after-life and begs the angle to 'wrestle' him to show him he's doomed for hell, "crack my sides to let me see," "that if the end will set me free" (meaning there is an after-life) "they're sending me down below" (hell) and then he brings about the aspect of jesus giving his life to forgive your sins and the prosses he went through to do that, carrying the cross on his back. "I never knew you actually cared i'm such a simple fool" talking about not realizing the love it took jesus to sacrifice himself for the narrirator.
this is my interpretation and i would love for others to expand upon this or even tell me i'm completely wrong.
angel* not angle...ha oops

Im not sure about the entire meaning of the song but i agree with the religion theory. It makes sense because of losing sleep from over thinking your fate in the afterlife, and he mentions God. The only thing im certain of is the line "Angel wrestle me, crack my sides to let me see." is referring specifically to a story from the Bible.
