you accept the ending, you cannot force someone to be with you and you cant do anything more that saying that "it's ok", you try not to cry but your mind keeps on going back to the memories of the time you had together and the times you kept of dreaming things to happen between you and him: "you kissed my arm as i look away". you were dreaming of the smallest signs of love. in a fading relationship you have nothing left but hoping in something in a long term to happen, something bigger that will give you the strenght to start over. "maybe ... i get to be a car driving in the night lighting up the dark" she thinks she will somehow turn into something that shows the way to go, something necessary to move forward on a road (life). even in this long term illusionary view she's stuck to the hope of hearing a spark in his voice, a spark that can make their relathionship burn again. live is a "one way road" where you cant just U turn and go back to what you want, she's careless of what she will stumble into from now on. i think the thunder is a methaphore for the changes and the hard times you have, like hearing a thunder under a blue sky. having issues to solve is ok, and she thought it was ok for him too. but turned out he was not cool with it, she cant reply anything but "it's okay, we all feel left out". and i think she's not just giving up, but she has a mature approach, where nothing is left to do but accepting your partner's decision. "growing up can get you down" is just a statement, to justify the feeling she has, no one told us that life would have been this hard, but we can just face the truth and get awareness to move on. "I give you some thing that no one's going to give you my sleepin' skin and my heart deep down in you I'll never tell you, but you're my little scar Goodbyes are hard" this is my favourite part, she has a wound to heal, but she wont tell him, she can just pretend to leave him something that no one else will ever give him: her skin and deep love. goodbyes are hard. (sorry for my english, hope it's all clear)

I can relate to many lines in this song, maybe not in the way she wrote them but they're sort of vague and apply to multiple circumstances i think. BUT.. the line "I give you something that no ones gonna give you. My sleeping skin and my heart deep down in you" I think this part of the song sinks in to so many not just the lyrics but the way she sings it... imperative. If we havent given this message to someone alreay, we wish we could have. thats why we're here. because we loved someone that we can't love anymore. and we've tried to put it in the past.. "sometimes growing up.." The truth is, we'll never forget or let go of the connection we had with this particular person. that made us so happy. that we miss so much. that we gave so much of ourselves to. we're not over them. we haven't found anything to replace that connection. and its been a while. hence the meloncholy. it's been too long

I think the song is about death in general whether it be suicide, lost love one... etc and not being afraid of what comes after life. We all have the hardest time saying goodbye and that's pretty much what i think the song is about. Not giving up.

I agree with a lot of what you said except to me the thunder is more representative of unrest or struggle, The road is life, and having a little thunder or problems is okay, you need a little thunder. The car metaphor I thought was interesting, there's a certain simplicity to it, a car driving quietly at night, it only lights up whats ahead, you cant see behind you at night, it also is a symbol of movement or leaving.

something in your voice sparks a little hope I'll wait up for that noise your voice become my home Though the spark may also be a continuation of the car metaphor, I believe this line is about waiting for a phone call. When she says "I'll wait up for that noise" I imagine someone (while in the car) waiting for a phone call. It follows with "your voice becomes my home" which ties into "driving in the night", a lonely image, but hearing someone's voice even in this sad setting gives her a sense of being home.

Basically everything they said, though I agree with rugs' comment on the spark metaphor. Goodbyes are hard..

I actually think it's about a girl who constantly considers suicide, and the only thing that keeps her holding on is the one she loves ("something in your voice sparks a little hope I'll wait up for that noise your voice become my home")
