The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
Boy I wish you weren't such a paranoid actress
And I the assassinated candidate
I feel like an accidental species
Some mutant love-child, never meant to be
No motion dancing, feel like we're an impossibility
Trying to keep the heart and the head but I was so down on the closing light
Couldn't even fake a smile, wanted to fire all my friends
And just start over again
[Repeat: x2]
Sister tells you No, our shit is only gonna get better
I'll let ya know let ya know let ya know
I feel like the last time is gonna be
My final collapse
I know from past experience
He never takes it easy on his regals
And you'll become a foreign substance lying in your familiar bed
Technology makes such an ugly mother
But no license does it offer only chaos scenarios
And the dream that we've been having look just like numbers
Still they love you at the office cause you the ban subject of countless masturbation fantasies

This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

Magical
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.
Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
"and i the assassinated candidate"
"mutant love child"
"trying to keep the heart in the head"
"but no lessons does it all for only chaos scenarios"
"and the dream that we've inherited, look, it's just random numbers"
Sisters don't you know Our shit is only going to get better Oh, oh, oh I feel like the last time is going to be My final collapse
the kevin barnes collapse told in hissing fauna was his last, he is focused and going forward now???
"I know from past experience He never takes it easy on his readers And you become a foreign substance Lying in your familial bed"
TOTALLY describing my feelings with this album. I'm almost, scared? No... Uncomfortable? Like it's too much information. Nice to know Kevin realizes he's mind-fucking his listeners!
to me it sounds like "And I the assassinated candidate"
"I know from past experience He never takes it easy on his readers" refers to God. and to "become a foreign substance lying in your familiar bed" is a reference to the was God would play up sins of the flesh. Kevin Barnes has been described as "the polite anti-christ". Given the sexual imagery throughout the album, this is clearly Barnes rejecting the rejection of God.
Overall I would say the song is about rejection and the unfavorable characterization of the girl and his situation of being potentially hers but then suddenly cut off clearly shows that, especially followed by the next stanzas.
I absolutely love this song, the cut from Beware our Nubile Miscreated into this one is incredible. I also really, REALLY like this album.
I love this song and I think it's very interesting that in the newly released music video they make a reference to Saint Christopher. The part where Kevin can't cross the river than the man in black carries him on his back across the river. They made Kevin look like Jesus (: Anyway, I love this song and I think it's absolutely orgasmic. <3
I don't know, for some reason I feel like this song is about him and his life. Maybe his childhood and teenage years and stuff was really good...but for some reason I get the feeling it wasn't, and this is him just breaking down for some odd reason.
"And I was so down on the closing night" is what I hear, which would make sense with the first few lines
A few corrections on the final verse:
Technology makes such an ugly mother But no LESSONS does it offer, only chaos scenarios And the dream that we've been HANDED: look just random numbers Still they love you at the office cause you've BEEN subject of countless masturbation fantasies
