Soft Skeletons Lyrics

Dear little girl
There's so much hurt for such a young age
Trapped inside a pretty little lie
Your body's betrayed

Don't fix your eyes on a fix you'll rely on
Fixed her eyes on a fix she relies upon

Stand unafraid
All the good souls
Stand unafraid

When the light starts to burn, and the pain returns
I just wish that I could heal the hurt you feel tonight
There's life in your veins
These needles are chains to hold you down
How can you expect to win this war if you're too afraid to fight?
Are you too afraid to fight?

Dear little one, there was so much pain
Time you can't replace
Trapped inside, too afraid to cry
And now hands and bruises cover face

Don't fix your eyes on a fix you'll rely on
Fixed her eyes on a fix

When the light starts to burn, and the pain returns
I just wish that I could heal the hurt you feel tonight
There's life in your veins
These needles are chains to hold you down
How can you expect to win this war if you're too afraid to fight?

Stand unafraid
All the good souls
Stand unafraid
All of the good souls stand unafraid

When the light starts to burn, and the pain returns
I just wish that I could heal the hurt you feel tonight
There's life in your veins
These needles are chains to hold you down
How can you expect to win this war

When the light starts to burn, and the pain returns
I just wish that I could heal the hurt you feel tonight
There's life in your veins
These needles are chains to hold you down
How can you expect to win this war if you're too afraid to fight?

I get the idea that its more about drug abuse with the line about needles are chains that hold you down. This whole album is just incredible.

I actually think this song might be referencing the sex slave industry, most notably in India. I know the lead singer has done some work there. For those who don't know, women are thrown into that industry at such a young age, around 14 in India and as young as 9 in Pakistan. That might explain things, just a thought though.

thank you for providing actual reasons for thinking the sex-slave route. I was starting to think I was completely missing something in the lyrics...

P.S. Where did you learn about their stint in india?

Stephen (lead singer) co-founded a non-profit called Faceless International. They have done some work in India through that in the past. Faceless focuses quite a bit on trafficking and fair trade. check 'em out: www.facelessinternational.com/

To me it seems to be about heroin abuse. "Don't fix your eyes on a fix you rely on. Fixed her eyes on a fix" Is a drug reference, obviously. "There's life in your veins. These needles are chains to hold you down." Would have to do with shooting up, and "When the light starts to burn" is referring to lighting a candle to heat up the spoon used to melt the heroin.

driscy21 hit the nail on the head. This song is about human trafficking in India. It's under Biography on anberlin.com at the bottom of the scroll-down page.

This song is all about Stephen watching a girl fall into a hard life of drugs and he just wishes he could help her.

And for those of you who think this is about Aids in India, you need to rethink this song because...

First of all anoceanbetween, It doesn't say anything about this song on their website.

Second: It says the girl is "Fixing her eyes on a fix." That is so obviously a drug reference.

Third: "Theres life in your veins, These needles are chains" HELLO?!?!?! thats pretty much like Stephen saying, "Stop shooting up"

Its a very powerful song and probably one of the best on the album.

I feel like the lyrics are written to hit way closer to home, about a personal loved one or lvoer or good friend, seeing them fall into hard drugs or substance abuse, i relate to

"When the light starts to burn, and the pain returns I just wish that I could heal the hurt you feel tonight"

those times when you want to help someone SO MUCH but they won't or can't let you in.

I believe these lyrics are about child abuse. And encouragement to stand up for yourself to stop it.

Thankyou! you've given me to courage to say what I've really been thinking-that this song is really talking about the republic of Ireland. Seeing as you didn't feel the need to tie ANY of the song's lyrics to your claims, I probably don't need to either!

P.S. Seriously though, where on earth did you get that out of the song? "little girl"? I suppose that could be tied to child abuse...somehow. But yeah, it's about a "young girl (probably teenage-20's) who got hooked on heroin. The "sex trade" certainly could go alongside drug addiction (and does quite often, serving as a tool...

So sad. But offers hope to those who are affected by sexual abuse, trafficking, drug abuse... and makes certain that there ARE good souls left in the world by saying "all the good souls stand unafraid' and encourages her to be one of them. One of the people who stand up to the bad things... the things that have caused her so much pain but she cannot get away from them.

Definatly drug abuse, AND probably could be interpreted as being about abuse. The girl in this song wa abused and turned to drugs to stop it.

"How can you expect to win this war, If you're too afraid to fight?" ^^ To me, he's challenging her, saying that she can't expect to kick her addiction if she's too scared to give it up.
