You On The Run Lyrics

Now you on the run son,
Since 1981
You went and did some things,
And spoiled the fun
Yeah, you got the FBI,
They ain't on your side
Yeah you're caught foolin' friend,
With a senator's wife
Oh I don't need it,
Well no one does

Just sit on this groove and chew,
As the heat grew and chew ;
A life of taking Love,
She fit like a glove
And in due time,
Yeah I'll be there

Well hello Harmony,
Whatcha doin' for free?
Yeah get on your knees you freak,
And please please me
A life of solitude,
Yeah, one with me, no you
Life on the run son,
It's all you knew
And I don't need it,
No, no one does

This song seems at first to be about something very specific, but I don't know what. Obviously someone did something wrong and pissed off some people in high places by sleeping with someone he shouldn't have, and possibly other things besides. But whatever the story of the song : "get on your knees you freak, and please please me" is so intriguing and complicates everything. What does it all MEAN? I'm also especially interested in the speaker's use of first person narrative. Who is speaking, and why? And not only that, the speaker repeatedly mentions "you" throughout the song (as well as in the title). Addressing "you" is very accusatory, especially when it's unclear who the "you" is. It's unsettling. It makes me think that maybe it is meant to be more universal than about one specific person.

The only thing I came up with is maybe it's about the subtle and coercive methods that various authorities use to control people and their desires, and the ostracizing that comes with failure to conform....?

@ireallydontknow I've analyzed this countless times, and I've come to a few conclusions:

>

  • The subject is a murderer, you can take that literally, or take your "universal" approach, and apply it as humans are murderers, literal and figurative, and we are always on the run from our actions and demons.

Not only because it is, but because the Angels are influenced by BJM, and Anton LOVES pastiches and references (recall "Straight Up and Down" long version, which incorporates Sympathy For the Devil as well as Hey Jude in its outtro). So, by the third property of algebra, they are paying homage to both classic bands and their personal faves in doing so.

  • My favorite point: The first album was at least partly a concept album about war and death, and so I feel that they are continuing that theme. Then again, every album by them has these as themes on at least one track.

Hope this helps, and happy listening!
