This song makes me chuckle so much. I don't think it's about not wanting to help someone commit suicide, per se. It seems very sardonic to me, maybe even daring this person to do it, or not caring one way or the other if they do it or not. It sounds to me like the person being addressed (the would-be suicider) is maybe an attention whore who frequently threatens suicide, or maybe just goes around feeling sorry for themselves and takes their misery out on others, or acts like some martyr. The speaker has had enough of this, so offers them instructions on how to hang themselves effectively ("you're gonna need more...rope"). The last part, about not kicking out any chairs, I think is saying that if you want to wallow in your misery, fine, but I won't be attending your self-pity party. |

| Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – I Let Love In Lyrics

Carries the opposite sentiments of the old "better to have lost and lost" adage. I suppose once you let Love in, like a vampire, it's got you. And its wicked little minions, Despair and Deception, set to work on you while Love sits back and watches with great relish while you squirm in pain. But it's definitely more of a self-damnation then a damning of Love. It's "I let love in," not "love broke into my house and accosted me." It's more about regret than being victimized. |

| The Black Angels – You On The Run Lyrics

This song seems at first to be about something very specific, but I don't know what. Obviously someone did something wrong and pissed off some people in high places by sleeping with someone he shouldn't have, and possibly other things besides. But whatever the story of the song : "get on your knees you freak, and please please me" is so intriguing and complicates everything. What does it all MEAN? I'm also especially interested in the speaker's use of first person narrative. Who is speaking, and why? And not only that, the speaker repeatedly mentions "you" throughout the song (as well as in the title). Addressing "you" is very accusatory, especially when it's unclear who the "you" is. It's unsettling. It makes me think that maybe it is meant to be more universal than about one specific person.
The only thing I came up with is maybe it's about the subtle and coercive methods that various authorities use to control people and their desires, and the ostracizing that comes with failure to conform....? |

| Ryan Adams – Why Do They Leave? Lyrics

I agree with cdhound, to some extent. It's not the most elegantly written Ryan Adams song, but the message is very clear. Perhaps it's not the message he intended, but it does make you want to value what you have before it's too late. Or if it's already too late, to listen to it and brood over fucking everything up. I don't believe this song though. I like it, but it sounds very insincere, which goes along with what cdhound said, that he didn't realize how much he wanted or needed this person until she was gone. This isn't a new concept, and he's gone about tackling it in the most selfish and self-pitying way possible. "I know I never really did much to make you want to stay, but what about ME?!" is the entire message of the song. |

After spending many long and lonely hours listening to this, I've decided that it's the sound of loving someone so much that it hurts. And refusing to allow that person close enough to love you as deeply as you love them, because a love that strong means sadness just as intense. Sadness of knowing that it can never last forever in this lifetime, and not knowing (or disbelieving) that it could continue in another. Though I do agree with another commenter that these lyrics are not quite right, and make for convoluted interpretations. |

Why should it matter who it's about, or whether or not her silence was dignified? It's a great song, let him pour his little manic heart out so we can all enjoy it listening to him bleed. |
