"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
I've got a friend who carries flowers everywhere he goes
He picks a new one everyday and everybody knows (I broke his heart)
I've got a friend who brought a picture frame on his trip across the world
But he broke it back in Denver, never made it to his girl in California
Why is it so hard to fall in love?
You turned it on, you turned it off
A broken heart just keeps on breaking
I've got a friend in Guatemala who swears he's given up
no conozco esperanza, and I don't believe in God (not anymore)
I've got a friend who talks to Jesus to heal her broken heart
She's holding onto pieces she's never even thought of letting go
We're still so young but our time is running out
This world keeps spinning round and round and round
Why is it so hard to fall in love?
You turned it on, you turned it off
A broken heart just keeps on breaking
On and on and on
One hand's on my heart, the other covering my eyes
I must confess: I am the lie, I am the love song
But I have never seen the light
What I feel for you is more than love
You turned me on, you turned me off
You come in warm and leave me shaking
Why is it so hard to fall in love?
You turned me on, you turned me off
A broken heart just keeps on breaking
On and on and on
We don't have much time to get this right
I've waited here a hundred years with my lover's heartbeat
You better get your kiss before it's midnight
Echoing distant miles, think of intense desire
Don't you get the set? It's now or never
One shot through, and we are young
And the sun is still strong
To find the song you love and dance forever
Forever

Hayalperest
Hayalperest
This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere.
In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
American Town
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.
I tried my best, but obviously I don't speak Spanish lol
I think it's
'and I don't believe in God (not anymore)' and 'one shot through, and we are young, and the sun is still strong'
this gets stuck in my head :)
Thanks =] I pondered over the "One shot through..." line for so long before I added the lyrics. I'm still not 100% on parts of the last verse though.
yeah, it's really hard to understand what they're saying. particularly cause i'm not used to american accents (i'm australian) haha.
i think its "no coma esta esperato" which roughly means "how do i not have hope"
I think its "no conozco esperanza" which means I don't know hope
and the "Echoing a distant night, think of taxes I earned" i think is "Echoing distant miles, think of tense desire" or "intense desire" not sure
I think intense desire would make more sense, so I'll go with that lol.
Alright, I made an account just for this song. The band, and Zechariah are friends of a friend. Actually, the person who the song is written for. So I thought I'd share the stories behind peices of the song.
First of all, it's a song about a girl that he was with that didn't work out, obviously. Most of the song is about her, and the real relationship that she and Zechariah had.
As for the references that I know of..
"I've got a friend who brought a picture frame on his trip across the world. But he broke it back in Denver, never made it to his girl in California."
That's about a real person, they had a friend who took a vacation across the country, he ended up drowning on his trip.
"I've got a friend who talks to Jesus to heal her broken heart. She's holding onto pieces she's never even thought of letting go."
That's about a conversation he had with her during a hard time in her life.
"You better get your kiss before it's midnight."
An obvious reference to the Cinderella story, and also the night that he met her they were young and she had a 12:00 curfew.
I'm pretty sure the translation would have to do with "echoing distant miles". They didn't work out because he moved across the country.
