The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

This song is really beautiful.
It's kinda ovbious. The boy did something to hurt the girl. and he feels really guilty. He wants her back and she doesnt know how sorry he is. He is still in love with her and she is most likey still in love with him. He remembers all the fun memories he had with her and doesnt want to let go of her or the memories.
These lyrics are pretty fucked up. But anywho, this song is AMAZING.
when he says "my heart's in agony" and "i never meant to make u cry" maybe he means that he lost the girl without even realizing it and now he feels guilty and shocked..maybe he never told her he loved her....the only part that confuses me is when he says "now that i have u" cause how can he have her since he just lost her? maybe he feels that now that he finally told her how he really feels he is going to have her back... dunno;p
this is the first song i heard by 1997... i went to warped tour and decided to check out their set even though i only knew one song. it was the best decision of the day. 1997 is amazing live.
