Nah. Prostitution. He doesn't like it at all, it hurts him quite badly. "Do I take a hit to the heart, should I let bleeding words weep?" The key to this interpretation is the lines: "When the red light's on, there's no one at home." Red light being a reference to the Red Light district. Google it for more info. Again, I feel as if this song is an ultimatum. Stop doing it, or there'll be no-one at home. (I'll go.)

I agree that the song is about prostitution, but I took a different spin from it. I think he is cheating on his girlfriend by going to visit prostitutes... "Flavour of the month is not that new to me" talking about the different prostitutes he visits.. and he feels that it's harming their relationship and it hurts him so he wants to tell her. "She's gotta know that when the red light's on there's no one at home".. meaning he won't be there when the red light's on.

I'm not sure about whether the 'red light' should be taken as a literal reference to prostitution, but may be a reference to cheating or just situations with a sexual context.

I think that "when the red light's on.. there's no one at home" could also be saying that when he's in sexual situations his brain shuts down emotionally. Or to rephrase it, that he's only there in body, not in spirit.

Also, I think the lyric is "should i let bleeding wounds weep?" rather than "words".. that's just by ear though; i could easily be wrong.

I took a similar spin on it but though it might be porn, as in when the "red light" the recording light was on, they were just doing their job - it wasn't them... maybe?

I think he is very close to someone who is involved with prostitution and is becoming to emontionally invested in there clients, so he is telling to just switch off when they are "working"

I think all your ideas are good but a bit strange. I dont really see how its about prostitution, but maybe Ian has said that or something. To me it seems its about his girlfriend and how she felt when he spent all his time with his band.. "When the red lights on, theres noone at home" refering to when he's recording. The verses are about how he puts the pain he and his girlfriend are going through to make great music.

I always took this song to be about HER success and them growing apart. Could be his success, though. I don't think the "red light" reference is literally about prostitution - it seems to be more about the emotional disconnect that comes from the work/success.
