I think all your ideas are good but a bit strange. I dont really see how its about prostitution, but maybe Ian has said that or something. To me it seems its about his girlfriend and how she felt when he spent all his time with his band.. "When the red lights on, theres noone at home" refering to when he's recording. The verses are about how he puts the pain he and his girlfriend are going through to make great music.

My Interpretation

They're getting prostitution from that exact line. Roxanne by the Police referenced "the right light" as what she put on when she went out to sell herself. "You don't have to put on the red light." There's no one at home because prostitution isn't about feeling.
