I'm not sure about whether the 'red light' should be taken as a literal reference to prostitution, but may be a reference to cheating or just situations with a sexual context.
I think that "when the red light's on.. there's no one at home" could also be saying that when he's in sexual situations his brain shuts down emotionally. Or to rephrase it, that he's only there in body, not in spirit.
Also, I think the lyric is "should i let bleeding wounds weep?" rather than "words".. that's just by ear though; i could easily be wrong.
