The Lining Is Silver Lyrics
I found my new black shoes
while cleaning out the bones left in my closet
They were there with a bad excuse
Bon Voyage
And I found a backup plan
I'm grateful that I didn't have to use it,
but it's made up of real good friends
Bon Voyage
Isn't it nice to know that the lining is silver
Isn't it nice to know that we're golden
I found a list of flaws
that I saw in myself and other people
And I threw it away because
Bon Voyage
Isn't it nice to know that the lining is silver
Isn't it nice to know that we're golden oh oh
Isn't it nice to know that the lining is silver
Isn't it nice to know that we're golden
Yeah we're golden oh
When it all falls apart and you can't see the forest for the CEMETERIES oh oh oh
Isn't it nice to
Isn't it nice to know
Isn't it nice to
Isn't it nice to know
Isn't it nice to know that the lining is silver
Isn't it nice to know that we're golden oh oh
Isn't it nice to know that the lining is silver
Isn't it nice to know that we're golden
Yeah we're golden oh
I found a love in me
I always somehow knew that it existed
It just needed to be set free
Bon Voyage
Isn't it nice to know
Isn't it nice to know
Isn't it nice to know
while cleaning out the bones left in my closet
They were there with a bad excuse
Bon Voyage
I'm grateful that I didn't have to use it,

Marcy Pluchino Mrs. Holbrook English 11AP September 19, 2011 “I found my new black shoes while cleaning out the bones left in my closet…Well I found a list of flaws that I saw in myself and other people and I threw it away because -- Bon Voyage! Isn't it nice to know that the lining is silver? Isn't it nice to know that we're golden? When it all falls apart and you can't see the forest for the cemeteries, isn’t it nice to know that the lining is silver?” Thiessen, Matt. "The Lining Is Silver." The Bird and the Bee Sides. Relient K. Mark Lee Townsend, 2008. In this song, Thiessen plays a boy who is finally maturing by gaining a new perspective (new black shoes) and accepting his flaws that he previously hid from himself and others. He starts to explain why he’s thrown out all of the misconceptions he owned of others but then cuts himself off and says bye! As if to say, I changed and the reason why does not matter, I’m just relieved to let that part of me go. When Thiessen asks, “isn’t it nice to know that the lining is silver...that we’re golden?” he’s really asking aren’t we lucky that we have a silver lining instead of nothing at all? And isn’t it nice to know we are youthful and full of potential? Instead of creating a song that showed how disappointed or frustrated he was that more people did not live life with these lessons, he gives a happier, laid-back approach which implies that Thiessen assumes these are morals that will be learned eventually. When comparing the forests to the cemeteries, he has finally distinguished two different types of future: a future full of promise, possibilities, potential and a future where death is inevitable and aspirations are futile. Thiessen writes that it does not matter which future you choose to live for, when things get rough there will always be at least one good thing to pull you through if you let it. “The Lining is Silver,” appeals to me because the lyrics deliver a simple yet relatable message through clever metaphors. The essence of two sides to every situation, every story, and every dilemma in life is what lays embedded in this song, so Thiessen can show you the brighter side and accept you through your darkest times.
First comment!!!! Okay, Relient K rocks. This is one of the new songs from the Bird and the Bee Sides. I haven't heard it yet but LOVE the Scene and Herd. I think this song means that it's nice to know that even trhough all your problems and mistakes, God's there for you.
I've heard it many times, catchy song, this song has alot of meaning, you can hear the effort, When you hear it, you'll know what I mean.
I'm having a rough guess that this song is about his past issues and bad times, but as long as God's there, its always gonna be alright.
localtoastTM i think you got it perfect. i didnt like this song at first... i thought it was kinda cheesy and effortless, but now i feel stupid for ever thinking that... i love it its too catchy : )
i like this song alot. Relient K is actually a really quality band. i think it's all about just making the best of any situation. Everyone always has things in their past they're ashamed of, but in truth just by being alive we've got a good thing going
This song is constantly stuck in my head :) His voice is so calming.
I don't believe in God, so unless a song comes right out and says it, I won't connect them, even with Relient K being a religious band and all. To me, this song basically just means that there's always something good in life. Yes, it's going to be hard, and yes, nothing will ever be perfect, but eventually you need to learn to look past the imperfections and just see the potential for good in the world.
Hey Nearthesky there is good in life and that is Jesus Christ! Christianity is not a religion is it a relationship with the One who died to wipe away sin and give eternal life. For starters I think that Matt is cleaning out his closet/life. He is removing and saying goodbye to past regrets he has stored for too long. When he says, "isn't it nice to know that the lining is silver" I think he is referring to the expression: "Every cloud has a silver lining" If you turn that in to a analogy, you could say that we are all clouds. Some with heavy hearts that need to be emptied, some with dark gray lining, others that are spread out thin across the sky, and those who's lining is silver. Anyone who interprets this differently? In "...we're golden", the 'we' I think is christians. Sounds really boastful, but we are washed clean by the blood of Jesus Christ. I'm going to listen again and make another post.
I'm a Christian, and I don't think hes referring to the fact that Christians are golden. Its an expression that we're all ok, as in we're ok with each other, reconciled.

Bon Voyage is french for "Good voyage" or "pleasant trip". But in slang form it is just goodbye. I have no good explanation for the new black shoes. Does anyone?
Matt emphasizes "Bones" as he sing it, which makes me think he isn't scared of them now. Being that the bones are now bones it suggests that they have been in there for a long time. Therefore, worth cleaning out. But who's bones? I think they are the bones of the people that he has stabbed in the back or hated. Not literally killed. (Hating your brother/anyone is as murdering them, to those who understand it biblicaly.) There is a bad excuse for each person's 'death'. I think that that the abstract excuse has only recently become bad in matt's eyes.
"I found a backup plan" I don't know what the original plan was. Any ideas? I find it is interesting that his backup plan is made up of real good friends. Was he going to USE real good friends? But he is saying goodbye to that plan now and is grateful that he didn't have to use it.
It is also interesting that he finds that list with both flaws that he saw in himself and in others. It gave me a uneasy feeling the first time, thinking that he doesn't want to fix those flaws on the list. But, are those flaws that he found in himself already corrected? Otherwise I give a thumbs up to Matt for throwing away and ignoring other peoples mistakes.
The only thing I can get from: "When it all falls apart and you can't see the forest for the CEMETERIES" is that the cemeteries are as vast as forests when times are depressing. Anything else? In the last verse I believe that his 'Bon Voyage' is one of happiness setting it free and not throwing it away.
Symmetries, not cemeteries. If you listen to the song, these lyrics are wrong. he doesn't say cemetERies. Hope that helps in your analysis.

and for original plan, maybe it wasn't important, hence not included. Maybe it didn't work, and he realised even trying, whatever it was, was a bad idea.
