The Guy Who Leaves Lyrics

Get up
Don't get up
I beg you to sit tight

Sweet girl, I'll be a ghost girl
Forget it, I am fine

If anything
A witnessing
Is all I needed that night

Until I get what I'm to get
He'll keep being compelled to flee
Until I out his false story
I'll keep blaming the guy who leaves

Brother, oh, brother
Solo you did bust out
All I knew was you didn't invite me
So begins .......... of self-doubt

There is nothing
As harrowing
As how I translate ..........

Until I get what I'm to get
He'll keep being compelled to flee
Until I out his false story
I'll keep blaming the guy who leaves

Baby, oh, partner
How well you've played this part
Similar, oh, how familiar
Reluctant truth you impart

And how you served necesity
Repeat until she sees light

Until I get what I'm to get
He'll keep being compelled to flee
Until I out his false story
I'll keep blaming the guy who leaves

many years later, i think the quick engagement indicates that Ryan was possibly having an affair with Scarlett for a while before Alanis made him leave. Scarlett and Ryan’s engagement happened suddenly and, when questioned, Scarlett insisted that she acknowledged how quick it seemed but that she knew the marriage was serious. How could you know after 2 months, and him being freshly out of an engagement for about 4 months? …. if they were seeing each other for awhile before then.

“Solo you did bust out, all i knew was you didn’t invite me. there is nothing as harrowing as how i translate facts.” Insinuates that he made a decision on his own to step outside of the relationship, and behind her back, until she finally put the pieces together.

“Until I out this false story, you’ll keep playing the guy who leaves” tells me that she’s keeping a secret about the causation of their split so that ryan isn’t depicted negatively.

This song is about how Alanis witnessed her father leave the family as a child, and her brother left home when he was young, that any man that Alanis develops a relationship will eventually leave. So every man she is attached to wether it be romantically or otherwise, is always playing "the guy who leaves"

The first line is "Dad oh, don't get up" it says it on the album.

I do agree that it is about a pattern of people leaving her that started from her nuclear family, but hey I don't think her father ever left the family. I think it is more about how she interprets the external reality of people leaving her and how her fears of having people abandoning her, as well as some annoying sick traits of her personality eventually cause people to leave. It is mostly men leaving her but she mentions female friends too: "Sweet girl..."...

"Until I get what I'm to get" is about her constant illusions, projections and expectations on those people and their role in her life, which she knows are impossible to be played up to, so she knows that she will never get what she is to get and once again gets sarcastic about herself. "Until I out this false story" means her lies "to herself and thereby to everyone else", her constantly justyfying her sick behavior.
