The Angel and the One Lyrics
It's not my destiny to be the one that you will lay with
So many reasons why I have to go but want to stay here
Sometimes I want a taste but then I don't know what I'm saying
You are the angel and I am the one who is praying
There is another love that I would rather be obeying
I see the ecstasy and already I'm anticipating
I feel a deeper peace and that deeper peace is penetrating
I've got the magic in me, I am complete is what I'm saying
I'm flying up so high, my purple majesty displaying
I've reached a higher place that no one else can make a claim in
I'll take you there, my friend
I'm reaching out my hand, so take it
We are the angels, and we are the ones that are praying
Peace, shalom, peace, shalom
Peace, peace
Peace, shalom, peace, shalom
Peace, peace
So many reasons why I have to go but want to stay here
Sometimes I want a taste but then I don't know what I'm saying
You are the angel and I am the one who is praying
I see the ecstasy and already I'm anticipating
I feel a deeper peace and that deeper peace is penetrating
I've got the magic in me, I am complete is what I'm saying
I've reached a higher place that no one else can make a claim in
I'm reaching out my hand, so take it
We are the angels, and we are the ones that are praying
Peace, peace
Peace, shalom, peace, shalom
Peace, peace

Definitely a song I can relate to. To me its basically about letting somebody know you aren't meant to be with them, even though you may not necessarily want to leave (so many reasons why...), yet being content and happy enough with yourself that you want them to feel the same way... That's one take on it anyway, it's a pretty deep song.
I don't think the song lets down at "peace, shalom" at all.
I'm clearly seeing this song as Rivers' statement that he's finally at real peace with who he is, after all of the "identity" struggles he's had. The fact that it closes the album makes just as strong a case as the lyrics and music as well. I think he could end it all after this and know that he's finally found the meaning he's been looking for in his life, and be happy by that.
PS: The guitar in "I'm flying - We are the Angels" really reminds me of Sunny Day Real Estate.
This song stands up easily to the classics. It's amazing on every level. The climax of this song sends tingles down my spine. Either way, I'd be willing to bet that this has to do with meditation.
I also think that the line is "this deeper peace has been a trade in." But there should be lyrics in the booklet when it's released.
yeah when the album comes out if someone wants to correct me on anything based on the lyric booklet i'll edit the lyrics
This song has a deep meaning for me. For me it's about love and letting go of the love that you don't see what the outcome will be; thus the lines "Sometimes I want a taste but then I don't know what I'm saying".
So, you choose for a love (the new person that loves you and you spend time with currently) which you don't love yet, because you still have feelings for the other one. But you know that the new love "loves you" for sure, and is sweet, and gives you the comfortable feeling, the "deeper peace"...Therefore you choose for her, knowing that at the end you'll love her and you'll be at peace after all.
It's something like that for me. I just can't stop listening to this song!
beautiful song.
i always thought it was about sexual bliss. the purple majesty part is what makes me think so, and the ecstacy and anticipation line.
I think yoga hit the nail on the head.
This song seems to be about moving on from one relationship to another. This song is important to me as I am going through this sort of thing.
To me, this song seems like Weezer's farewell. I mean lyrically, you guys have it pretty much figured out, but as far as the song as a whole goes, it actually feels like it might be the last song to me.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that this song is representative of... well... Weezer's entire career. I especially feel the "goodbye" in the guitar solo.
10 years later, they've done 5 more album and they're still touring. I think it's safe to say you turned out to be wrong about that. Not the worst thing to be wrong about though.

Oh, by the way, one lyric above is wrong.... I feel a deeper peace and that deeper peace is penetrating
Should be: I feel a deeper peace and that deeper peace has been a trade-in.
Once you read my post above, you'll understand why I think this is much more correct. Although both would work, I think "trade-in works so much better with the rest of the song."
Please refute or agree with what I am about to suggest because I haven't quite seen this yet in any responses...
... I believe this song is about a bad girl (possibly new to him) tempting him to betray the other TRUE LOVE that he feels offers much more than something temporary. Please allow me to explain...
"Sometimes I want to taste, but then I don't know what I"m saying" -To anybody that has been in a relationship, they have experienced this temptation to cheat. He obviously feels inclined because he wants to "taste" her, possibly with kiss, but then he realizes what his impulses are inclining him to. . .
"There is another love, that I would rather be obeying" -I believe this other one is the love he has been with for awhile.
"I see the ecstasy and already I'm anticipating" -He now wants to leave where he is with this new girl and the thoughts of his permanent love is exciting him to go back.
If you ask me what was meant in the reference to the "angel" and how he was originally the one "praying," I think that the angel was sent to him to show him the path he should be taking. By the end he wants to help her out and this is evident with the lyrics...
"I'll take you there my friend I'm reaching out my hand so take it" -He now wants to help HER like how she indirectly helped him so he now refers to the two of them as...
"WE are the angels, and we are the ones that are prayin'"
One thing I don't understand about the song are the lines --"I'm flying up so high my purple majesty displaying"
I wonder if that is a reference to him finally having sex after marrying his own permanent love...
