Thought I Knew Lyrics
Sorry about my past life
Sorry but we just missed
Sorry it had to end up like this
Sorry if I caused you pain
Sorry, I forgot your name
Sorry, but you left me out in the rain
Thought I knew you better than
Thought I knew your intentions
Thought I knew, but I didn’t have a clue
Not a single damn thing was true!
Sorry if I caused you harm
Sorry I’m no good luck charm
Sorry you didn’t end up in my arms
Thought I knew you better than
Thought I knew your intentions
Thought I knew, but I didn’t have a clue
Not a single damn thing was true!
Now that I
World’s gone down
We’ve traded away
Blew out the spark
And now we’re left with broken hearts
Tryin’ to find a new place to start
Thought I knew you better than
Thought I knew your intentions
Thought I knew, but I didn’t have a clue
Not a single damn thing was true!
Sorry but we just missed
Sorry it had to end up like this
Sorry, I forgot your name
Sorry, but you left me out in the rain
Thought I knew your intentions
Thought I knew, but I didn’t have a clue
Not a single damn thing was true!
Sorry I’m no good luck charm
Sorry you didn’t end up in my arms
Thought I knew your intentions
Thought I knew, but I didn’t have a clue
Not a single damn thing was true!
World’s gone down
We’ve traded away
Blew out the spark
And now we’re left with broken hearts
Tryin’ to find a new place to start
Thought I knew your intentions
Thought I knew, but I didn’t have a clue
Not a single damn thing was true!

gives me a 90s pop-rock feeling like i'm listening to the gin blossoms, sister hazel, or toad the wet sprocket.
@KennyDubs definitely gives the impression of an retro song from that era

The others members of Weezer are a talented bunch. I've enjoyed the side projects of The Rentals, The Special Goodness, and the Space Twins quite thoroughly.
As for meaning... this song seems to be about a guy who was dumped by a girl. I think she might want to get back with him, but he's saying he won't because of the way he treated her. I'm not positive though. It's late...
@TheSilverNoble Or is it the opposite?? That is, the girl dumped him because he didn't know her

Nah i think ur a little off SilverNoble.. seems more like the guy broke up with the girl. With the line "Sorry you didn’t end up in my arms" it makes it sound like he did the breaking up. Also with the "Now that I.." line, i see at as: now that i broke up with you, yada yada. He thought he knew her and her intentions, but he was mistaken. He didn't like what he saw when his eyes were opened to who she actually was. Clearly he is sorry for "causing [her] pain", but he is confident that ending the relationship was the best choice, because the real her "left [him] out in the rain".
I agree with Beaver mostly, though he (song character) accuses her of making the relation.
Personally, this is my favorite song on the Red Album. I especially like the tone changes between the verses, chorus, and bridge. True mastery of writing and playing by Weezer.
who's singing?
Brian
and Pat's playing guitar!
This is probably one of my favorite songs on the new album. Good job, Brian!
i think this is the least weezerly song on the album, but i still love it.
It's about a girl dumping a guy.
"Sorry..." lines are the girl speaking, apart from "Sorry, but you left me out in the rain"
The chorus and bridge are the guy's response.
Straightforward.
