Nah i think ur a little off SilverNoble.. seems more like the guy broke up with the girl. With the line "Sorry you didn’t end up in my arms" it makes it sound like he did the breaking up. Also with the "Now that I.." line, i see at as: now that i broke up with you, yada yada.
He thought he knew her and her intentions, but he was mistaken. He didn't like what he saw when his eyes were opened to who she actually was.
Clearly he is sorry for "causing [her] pain", but he is confident that ending the relationship was the best choice, because the real her "left [him] out in the rain".
