My personal interpretation is that the album is essentially a flashback of someone's youth, and this is the prologue - a person is somehow reminded of someone they loved in their teens, and they're getting lost in all the memories, perhaps feeling sad (save me)...and then the flashback begins.
I have to say, I really love and buy into this interpretation. Especially after hearing dark moves of love end the album

getting older is to be growing colder, so they say... everyone, regardless of their age, gets hit with the waves of nostalgia at some point, to some of us it's as familiar as our most potent of memories, burned into the back of our eyelids.

I was reading about the poet Joseph Brodsky when i noticed that the two words of this song appeared in one of his poems: 'I was practically blind. You, appearing, then hiding, Gave me my sight and heightened it.' Brodsky had written it when his femme fatale lover,Marina Basmanova, had left him. His other poems describe Basmanova appearing as an apparition coming back to haunt him. Perhaps this song refers to one's past lover returning to him/her as a ghost, and he/she can't deal with their emotional past, so much so that he can't help but cry 'save me'.
I think this beautiful song is saying something about how teenagers sometimes want their childhood back. And it's sad that that they are living as a list teenager. And he wants his/her younger self to save them from the hurts of being a teen. Or it could mean a middle aged person going through a middle aged crisis and wanting to return to their teenage years.
This is such a beautiful & haunting piano/synth intro. Not a lot of lyrics to work with as far as an interpretation, but it makes sense in an abstract kind of way.
I get the impression of being haunted by a person, or having a crush/relationship that is steeped in romantic idealism ... so that seeing them suddenly "appear" somewhere, or maybe seeing their face come into focus in a crowd of people, is enough to make you feel completely lost ("Where are we?" maybe some existential angst tied in there as well).
Being around this person is an experience of heightened emotional sensitivity, but at the same time its terrifying ... the "Where are we?" in the background seems to also connote confusion or uncertainty, but you hope that this person could somehow "save you."
We all want something or someone to come along and save us & turn everything to gold, right?
It's obvious that I'm projecting some of my own feelings onto this, but these are the emotions it stirs up for me. I guess the lyrics are so thin, many meanings could to be applied. There is this girl I see out every now & then, and when I look at her face, I instinctively think something along the lines of "Where are we? SAVE ME!" ...

this song is for anyone, everyone... the words are widely and subjectively applicable. to me, that's incredible - being able to project your own experiences onto the words as the images of your past play themselves in your mind.
