Ghosts Lyrics

In the first days of the spring time
made you up and split from one thousand enemies
made a trail of, of a thousand tears
made you a prisoner inside your own secrecy

There's a ghost in me
who wants to say "I'm sorry"
Doesn't mean I'm sorry

At the first hour of the springtime
made you up and split from one thousand enemies

now I see you from the corner
clock strikes
and I know you will be drinking alone

There's a ghost in me
who wants to say "I'm sorry"
Doesn't mean I'm sorry.

These are the correct verses, first of all, if you hear the raw vocal tracks:

V-I:

In the first days - of the spring time Made you a prince with a thousand enemies Made a trail of - a thousand tears Made you prisoner inside your own frequency

V-II

At the first hour - of the spring time Made you a prince with a thousand enemies Now I see you - from the corner Clock strikes - and I know you will be drinking alone...

This is a quote directly from Watership Down and the story of the rabbits who fled to recolonize a different place upon a premonition of danger:

"All the world will be your enemy, Prince of a Thousand enemies. And when they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you; digger, listener, runner, Prince with the swift warning. Be cunning, and full of tricks, and your people will never be destroyed. ..."

Seeing as the video depicts rabbits and danger and all that, I would be hard-pressed to not think the quote and the video are references to the fact that these band members (3 of them anyway) are English/British and it's a 1972 British novel they likely read while young and it "got to them" to some degree. I read it in grade school too in America and I was born in '72.

But the overall message of the song about a broken relationship and her having separated him from his friends to some degree and now he is without love and without friends "drinking alone" is some reference of her remorse for what happened,...even if it's not her fault and she technically is not sorry for what happened, just has mixed feelings of how it turned out.

That's my take. :) -Krusty

Thank you for the actual lyrics, and I agree with parts of your assessment, but without even knowing that the lyrics were from Watership Down (a fav of mine btw), I had a definite sense that this song was undeniably about the Native Americans and the American/British white guilt about what happened. It's just too clear.

@Krusty1 I agree w/ the Watership Down reference, nice catch, btw! Trail of a thousand tears could be a reference to the Native American displacement of the same name. Two references with some sad/negative connotations.

The rabbit god is hunted by everyone, the Native Americans were excommunicated from their homes.

My take is that the lyricist intentionally did this damage to their lover’s social status out of a passion, during quarrel or breakup. Now, she sees the consequences and that ghost is some inkling of remorse or the knowledge that she should feel remorse, but that doesn’t mean she...

i agree with chainsaw arm her conscience (ghost in me) wants her to admit that she has done something wrong and she wants to tell them sorry to make them fell better even though she isn't sorry about what she has done

The first verse in the lyrics are incorrect... It's supposed to say:

"In the first days of the spring time Made you a prince with a thousand enemies Made a trail of a thousand tears Made you a prisoner inside your own frequency"

I don't know where people hear "made up and split from one thousand enemies"...? You can clearly hear the lyrics on the Modwheelmood remix of the song.

I'm sure this song has a deep meaning, but it's just hard to decipher because the song writer wanted to be as vague as possible.

Well, the "Ghost in me" chorus isn't hard to figure out, it seems like somewhere in the speaker regrets an action they will, have, or are taking. But, the speaker still feels justified for their action regardless of the sympathy they feel for the audience.

However, the "Prince with a thousand enemies" line is so abstract, that I have to think it's a reference to something else. It could be a reference to Richard Adams "Watership Down". The character El-ahrairah would be the "Prince with a thousand enemies" from that book.

I think it's possible that the ONLY relationship between the speaker and the audience is one between a rabbit and his/her owner. Either that, or the speaker is also a rabbit.

It makes plenty of sense, the deal with the wolf and the rabbits when you watch the music video. I don't entirely understand the entire song, however.

I hope someone can decipher the rest of the song for us soon. It's pretty good. :)

I think the song is like this: "There's a ghost in me, who wants to say I'm sorry." That means that the person she was before would have said I'm sorry but that person is dead but still lingers every now and then (ghost). She doesn't mean I'm sorry which is that she the person she was before would have apologized but the person she is now won't.

Very simple stuff here. Ladytron lyrics are so easy. Yeah right!!! lol

I agree: the ghost doesn't match up if her apology is simply polite, or if she feels no regret, unless the ghost is supposed to imply that this song is about the past.

I believe the ghost is herself from before, that somewhere inside her she has lingering regrets, due to his present circumstances, but she doesn't regret what she's done because of where she is at in life when writing this song.

The fact that it's a ghost could also mean she's haunted from these possible regrets; the haunting isn't suffocating her, hardly, she's actually quite disconnected from it,...

i think that she feels like she should say sorry mabey just to be polite although she is not really sorry... :)

I definately believe this song reffers to a relationship that went sour. In my oppinion when they broke up, somwhere deep inside her she wanted to apologise to him (even if she did nothing bad, thats the ghost part), just to get him back and be toghether again but her head refuses to do so.

After some time she just sees him drinking alone. Seems like he saw the mistake he made and now is alone, however she has moved on so there is nothing more to be said or done between them.

I have no idea what the lyrics are supposed to mean but I somehow feel that Ladytron know their talents and that can be found in Helen Marnie's voice. So while the lyrics to this song may not mean much (in my opinion) the way they are sung and expressed is what makes it a standout

I think this song is about something that didn't come out as planned, like a relationship. Say there was a fight, and she did something that made them really sad. And later she had a thought of regret but still didn't feel bad about it.

idk....maybe the person is schizophrenic?
