Mr. Maker Lyrics

Mr. Maker he's got it made
A beautiful wife and a baby on the way
And his bills are already paid
No need to skimp, no need to save
But all around him, the world grows hard
He thinks to himself, he must have played a lucky card
If he was alone he'd give it all away
To people and things, that he wanted to save

But oh no, it's alright
Mr. Maker, he'll be fine
It's alright, it's OK
Because of the love he gave away
Oh yeah
Oh yeeeeeeeah

Doesn't stop to think it's because of he
Always doing right, he stays healthy
The girls in the alley won't get a hold of him
He's got no time for that kind of sin
And he, he's not a member of the Catholic Church
The pastor of his town got sent down for dirt
He sees the boys from Sunday school
It's hard to believe what he read in the morning news

But oh no, it's alright
Mr. Maker, he'll be fine
It's all right, it's OK
Because of the love he gave away
Oh yeah
Oh yeeeeeeeah

Heart beat, stay heavy
Love us all please, stay on your feet
For me
For me, stay on your feet for me
For me, stay on your feet for me

But oh no, it's alright
Mr. Maker, he'll be fine
It's alright, it's OK
Because of the love he gave away
Oh yeah
Oh yeeeeeeeah

i think this song is actually about a guy who is very rich and sees about all the poverty and trouble in the market etc but he keeps his money and decides to spend on himself and his family instead of giving it away to charities etc

But all around him, the world grows hard He thinks to himself, he must have played a lucky card If he was alone he'd give it all away To people and things, that he wanted to save

also the line about what he read in the morning news

I always thought it was kinda like, look, Mr. Maker has this great life, everything is perfect... or so it seems. Even though everything seems perfect, he has struggles just like everyone else, to the point where he is contemplating taking his own life, that it's not important. but the narrator of the song cares for Mr. Maker, he asks him to "stay on your feet for me." "heart beat, stay heavy"--don't give up! The narrator is trying to tell Mr. Maker to hang in there, he can make it because of all the love that he has. idk... that's what struck me when i heard this.

I think this song is saying that you don't have to be religious or a member of a certain group to have a good life (He's not a member of the Catholic church). But that people need something perfect to believe in, to motivate them into being better people themselves. Hence Mr. Maker, even if he's struggling with other things (Love us all, please stay on your feet). I always thought of when people say 'meet your maker.' The meaning of this song is hard to grasp, but that's my take.

My Interpretation

Wow. I got something pretty different from this song. It seems to me that "Mr. Maker" does have a really good life - wife, kids and money and all that - but I think he also has a problem, or at least used to. I've been listening to this song for a while and I used to think all the same stuff, that it's just about your typical family man, but I always thought that made the song a little flat, without much depth or insight. Also, I was always troubled by the lyric "because of the love he gave away." Now, in light of some recent events in my own life I think I've figured it out. I think "Mr. Maker" may be a recovering addict or alcoholic. That would explain the "love he gave away" as well as the "stay on your feet for me" line. But if anyone has a better idea of what those lines could mean, please tell me. It may just be my own life biasing my opinion of the song.

Oh man! Sorry. Have to type whatever I wrote again. Okay, so it's about how we girls would like some guy who's like a gentlemen, respectful, religious, doesn't take advantage of looks, etc.

i like this song, but teh catholic priest bit was irrelevant, other than the fact catholics dont have pastors, its stereotypical and most priests are men who have devoted their whole life to religiona dn helping others. it really annoys me that people think all catholics are fanatic and priests are pedos

other than that, good song

This comment is irrelevant. People aren't on here to be preached at.

Your religion is corrupt, so get over yourself. "people think all catholics are fanatic" And you send such a good example to contradict that right?

its simple. its a story. a 'perfect' life "a beautiful wife and a baby on the way. his bills are already paid"

then it just goes on, about what he basically wants to save. like i said, just a story.

This is one of my favourite songs by The Kooks. The tune is so catchy!

Mr. Maker sounds like a nice guy [: haha.

I agree, echo369. Mr. Maker has it made--a beautiful wife, kids, money, etc. He realizes that the world around him doesn't have what he has been blessed with. In the chorus, he justifies the decision not to give to charities and help the world around him because he has given himself to his family already.

"But oh no, it's alright Mr. Maker, he'll be fine It's all right, it's OK Because of the love he gave away"

Very, very catchy song.

But it says "if he was alone he'd give it all away". I personally took this to mean that he is selfless, and would give away his money if he did not have a family to support.
