damn, this song is amazing. Surprised there's only 2 comments so far! I also like Anarchitect interpretation. I'm not so great at interpreting songs, but i guess however someone interprets the song for themselves, then thats good enough. With that said, I'm still unsure of the meaning, but the sound is awesome.

Love this part. I think its somewhat self explanatory. She wants to be saved by someone (the person shes singing about). Shes unsure if he/she will save her (hold me) or if they just don't five a shit about her
i would say anarchitect and mymaryjane87 have this song figured out...it really hauntingly fantastic. portishead is so amazing.
Deep, beautiful, intimate song, reminding me of Lhasa de Sela and others.
My interpretation: "In this world" where there's not enough love and intimacy, I/we feel the need for signs of love. I don't believe I'd get them by asking for them directly, "I'd ask you for nothing" except for waiting for awhile. So if you would hold me when I fall, wouldn't it be a sign of love? By making myself fall (in what way is not specified) I test you, I am starting to hurt myself so I can get the last possible sign of love.
Sadly, this is what we do many times in our relationships. We stop being vulnerable and we don't show our emotions. We just go on hurting ourselves in a secluded own world.
I prefer to listen to the song from a melancholy frame of view and that makes it feel beautiful and deep. It also can be sensed from a despair, abandonment and depression perspective.
I can not make any conclusions as to the meanings of each of the words in Hunter. Beth's singing and the group's contribution drew me in. Now, after years of enjoying other bands I find myself returning to the works of Portishead and finding so much more each time. The comments I have found here have me considering the lyrics as a whole and a more profound form sets in. What a great combination of talent!
