No one to hold, no place to lie
I know we're all alone and still
You come to brush this gray aside
I know, I know, it's fate I feel
You answer to our hungry eyes
I hope, I hope this must be real
We need you now, we need to heal
Oh no, oh no, oh God, where'd you go?
You give us love, we have to hide
I know, I know, it's shades of gray
You give us hope and give us strife
I know, I know, this price we pay
You tell me no, I ask you why
I know, I know, your patient ways
You wait until we see the light
Oh no, oh no, oh God, where'd you go?
Oh, God
And tell us how to feel inside
No lies, no lies, no lies
And let me look upon that sign
With eyes, with eyes, with eyes
And tell me how you wear that crown
Of right, of right, of right
You lift us up then let us down
We die, we die, we die
You answer to the wrong and wide
I know, I know, their faith you fill
You give us strength and make us fight
I know, I know, we're supposed to kill
You pit us up on different sides
I know, I know, that's just your will
I wonder if you'll wait until
Oh no, oh no, this place will explode
You live above this great big sky
I hear it's nice, it's always spring
I've come to ask you for advice
I know you're busy for a king
You tell me once, I ask you twice
How long, how long, before they sing?
We did the things you said, alright
Oh no, oh no, oh God, where'd you go?
Oh, God
And tell us how to feel inside
No lies, no lies, no lies

They are obviously trying to make the point of the God who wasn't and isn't there. They're talking about all of the blind faith people put into Christianity but never really think about what they are worshipping.
If he's talking to God in the song, he obviously believes in him. He just has some questions, that's all.

There could totally be good without evil.
holy fucking shit. that is all.
when are people going to stop blaming evil on God? And how can one say he knows God's ways?
Maybe because he doesn't exsist...?

So, he doesnt exist, yet he's responsible for suffering, convienient. Sounds more like it's people projecting whatever they want to believe to me, but let me say this: anybody who says god doesn't exist hasn't looked at a flower.

Anyone who thinks a flower is proof of a deity demonstrates a lack of the most basic, elementary knowledge.

the way meric says "oh god" gives me the chills.
I love it. I basically agree with tugboat! But I like what harvardlawlz said too.
The song seems to be about how the world has so many bad things in it, along with the good things. Faith in a god is supposed to be positive and optimistic, and the god is supposed to be good. The faith is in that everything happens for a reason, for the larger good. But the hope that religion brings doesn't help anything in the big picture, and in fact, it causes some violence as opposed to being positive all the time ("You give us hope and give us strife," "You give us strength and make us fight," "You lift us up then let us down"). The overall message of the song, I think, is basically a wondering of how a supposedly good god could let such horrible things happen to the everyday people that He (for convention) created and loves and cares for. If you believe in God and in fate and in a larger plan, I imagine that it's hard to see all the suffering and death and misery and starvation and oppression and murder and hate and prejudice in the world and not have that faith waver. You'd think that all that would be minimal. Instead, you see people killing and hurting others, sometimes in the name of God.
The reason why there couldn't be good without evil is because without an opposite, theres not really reason for a name. That probably doesn't make sense... It's like.. if the only emotion was happiness, then no one would really ever be happy because theres no other emotion to feel. If that makes sense? I believe this song is beautiful, but I feel sad for the sense of despair that the writer portrays.
God is in everything, and if you're really looking for him, you'll without a doubt find him. Then again, this is songmeanings.com. not my personal outlook on life.
I think it's more frustration than despair. The song seems to portray a person who has been told all his life that god is good and wonderful and loves everyone, then contemplates why such a god would create so much suffering. I really like the imagery in the fifth verse:

He realizes prayer is a futile exercise, and that it seems rather selfish that god would sit in heaven all day while we suffer on earth.
He eventually loses his faith, realizing that the religion he has been led to believe was true all his life was in fact a lie, and he's left lost and confused: "oh no, oh no, oh God, where'd you go?"
I didn't have an account on here, but after reading the comments I felt the need to add my personal input. I should also letcha know that while I'm not a christian or really any religion, I believe in God with all my heart and believe that, despite all the pain and suffering in the world, God is still right here with us.
I think this song is mostly about how people use God as an excuse to hurt and kill others. They somehow find a way to rationalize the killing in their heads. I think this song is asking God how all this is happening on his watch. It's not denying that God exists, it's just asking God to put an end to all the suffering. The song is trying to teach people to stop using God as an excuse and instead to love each other.
I just made an account to say the same thing even though I don't really believe in a god but I do believe in a higher power

Ohh, this is a great closer. Meaning is pretty obvious
what does this mean
It's about that timeless struggle to understand God. "Tell me how you wear that crown of right... you lift us up then let us down." It contains those common themes that people often struggle to grasp when they attempt to rationalize God and his actions (or lack thereof). How can God exist if there is so much evil in the world? Why do we hide from God if it is he who gives us love? God gives hope and strife simultaneously which leaves Meric (and the rest of us for that matter) to ask, why?....God?

I see it as a criticism of the concept of God, talking about the inherent contradiction of an omnipotent deity, and an expression of the resulting frustration.
