Apologies Lyrics

Yesterday he said my eyes were fading fast away
I said well, what do you expect, you asked me not to stay
And if it had all been for the best
I wouldn't feel this way, he said, oh, he said

He said it's crazy how love stays with me, yeah
You know and it hurts me ?cause I don't wanna fight this war
And it's amazing to see me reading through this scene of love and fear
And apologies, apologies

My love is like a blanket, gets a little bit too warm sometimes
I wanna wrap somebody in it who can hold me in his arms
?Cause when it got a little too hot in there
He was always steppin' out for air and he froze, oh, he froze

But he says it's crazy how love stays with me, yeah
You know and it hurts me ?cause I don't wanna fight this war
And it's amazing to see me reading through this scene of love and fear
And apologies, apologies

Yesterday he looked at me with a tear in his eye and said
I always tell you you're my friend, I hope I don't have to lie
?Cause it?s clear you love another man
And I said, you're damn right and he said, oh, he said

He said it's crazy how love stays with me, yeah
You know and it hurts me ?cause I don't wanna fight this war
And it's amazing to see me reading through this scene of love and fear
And apologies

He says it's crazy how love stays with me, yeah
You know and it hurts me but I didn't figure it out before
And now it's too late for a soliloquy, way too late for dignity
It's time for apologies, apologies, apologies, apologies

Honestly after reflection, I think fear of commitment hits far closer to the mark than one or the other members of this relationship cheating on the other. It sounds far more to me that the man couldn't return the fierceness of love that the woman has put forth (due to the fear of commitment), and finally he "froze" and, for lack of a better term, released her from the relationship to find someone who could do that for her. Only after she does, he realizes the horrendous mistake he's made, and this song is probably an acount of the last conversation the two will ever have. A breakdown of my reasoning is below.

"Yesterday he said my eyes Were fading fast away" It's become obvious to him she no longer feels for him what she once did.

"I said well what do you expect You asked me not to stay and if it had all been for the best I wouldn't feel this way" It becomes apparent they had a relationship, and he asked her to leave, but why?

"Oh he said it's crazy How love stays with me You know it hurts me Cause I don't wanna fight this war It's amazing to see me reading through this scene Of love and fear and apologies" It is revealed that he harbors strong feelings for her, and every day he's reliving and dealing with his mistake in ending the relationship.

"My love is like a blanket That gets a little bit too warm sometimes I wanna wrap somebody in it Who can hold me in his arms Cause when it got a little too hot in there He was always stepping out for air and he froze Oh he froze" It is revealed that she loved him with a fierceness that he could not reciprocate. A huge fear of commitment drives him away time and again and puts a wedge between them that they cannot overcome. This is the answer to the question we are made to ask in verse 1.

"Yesterday he looked at me With a tear in his eye and said I'll always tell you you're my friend I hope i don't have to lie Cause it's clear you love another man I said you're damn right" He's discovered it's too late to mend their relationship. She's found someone else who can return her love with the strength and commitment she has, and she has moved on. He's clinging to the only thing he could possibly have left from the relationship: her friendship.

"He said it's crazy How love stays with me You know it hurts me That i didn't figure it out before" He realizes only too late exactly what he's lost, and it's killing him.

"And now it's too late for a soliloquy" Nothing he can say will change it.

"It's way too late for dignity" He'd beg/plead/crawl/ whatever, if only it would work OR (more likely) He knows he cannot justify his past actions, he has only one recourse left:

"It's time for apologies"

Your comment is absolutely so right on. That is EXACTLY what the song means to me. I have always loved this song and G.P..

And I wonder if she ever received (or will receive) a proper apology...

Wow, am I the only one who seems to think that she's just wanting so badly to just love "someone"... "anyone"... That when she does, she smothers the shit out of them. In this case, it's this dude, that keeps wanting to go back and forth. If you listen to the verse:

My love is like a blanket That gets a little bit too warm sometimes I wanna wrap somebody in it Who can hold me in his arms Cause when it got a little too hot in there He was always stepping out for air and he froze Oh he froze

It's obvious that she smothers him, and he clearly doesn't like to be smothered. Hence the "stepping out into the cold" part. But yet he wants to love her. I hate being smothered too, if it's any consolation... It really makes for a hard time trying to breath, which is a key ingredient to living, ya know. Just saying... I usually don't comment with my POV on love songs, but I think a bunch of ya'll missed a big point in this one. Of course, I have been known to be wrong. It's all good.

I agree to an extent with Freeze. Her love is intense, but I don't think it's that she's just "trying to love" someone or anyone. She really did love the guy. And it was an intense love and maybe she did smother him, but don't we all to some degree at some point in the relationship. I really do think that she just tried too hard and the intensity of her love pushed him away because he was stoic and didn't know how to recipricate it until it was too late (He was always stepping out for air and he froze) He he finally realizes his mistake, she's moved on and all there is left is just apologies. I don't really think she had an affair, though I could see how maybe she was starting to see this other person right before the end of the first relationship.

But, I might be crazy.

like rileycat i hear this song on amc all the time. but i still love it. actually me and my friends make fun of it whenever it comes on, because you can bet that whenever apologies comes on something overly dramatic is happening. so whenever i hear this song i can't help but laugh. but i still love amc and apologies. ;)

i think it's about: the girl is cheating on the guy for another man and he knows it, but he still loves her (it's crazy how love stays with me) and he wants to still be friends with her.(I'll always tell you you're my friend / I hope i don't have to lie / Cause it's clear you love another man). he feels like he's lost his dignity because he didn't know for a long time that she was stepping out on him. and he knows that it's too late to go back and fix it, now it's just time for them to apologize for their mistakes and end it.

Thanks to One Tree Hill - I was introduced to this absolutely beautiful song.

The piano chords at the beginning captivated me..When I heard thevoice that quickly follows.. I knew this song would mean A LOT to me..

To me this song is about a relationship that ended... HIS CHOICE - for the best ( so he says )

The time passes & he slowly grows weaker n weaker from the constant battle brewing inside his heart...fighting a love he knows he can't deny...but his dignity it too large to give in....too stubborn...he's simply too stupid! And suddenly for the best doesn't seem so clear anymore..when all he feels is anguish..

It's CRAZY that after so much time - after so many painful memories - many lovers later perhaps - he realizes the love they had haunts his every move..everywhere he goes...

She clearly adored him - all she ever wanted to do was "blanket' him with all her love...a love that he took for granted...

He clearly has this epiphany and comes knockin on her door..with a tear in eye...and fear in his heart...for he knows...that he might have lost her for good..but he just had to find out for himself...was it too late?

Two words - DAMN RIGHT

And suddenly whatever long beautiful speech he might have prepared in his mind the night before or perhaps that moment in time...goes out the window...

Leaving him with room for a simple APOLOGY

For not realizing it before - for walking away from love

This song hits my heart in ways that few have..seeing it closely relates to my 4 year relationship that went down the drain a year ago..

I found my DAMN RIGHT =) & He's Wonderful

Making this song that much more better...

So yeah...that's my take on this

I think that this song is about a guy and a girl who were in a relationship before, but she might have "smothered" him or maybe he wasn't faithful, or maybe he just broke up with her and she eventually moved on and fell in love with another man. But then the original guy realized that love stays with him and he realizes he made a mistake and never treated her right. But now it's too late and he can't do anything about the fact she loves someone else. He's amazed because he never thought at the time that he would be "reading through lines of love and fear and apologies"

Grengor: You got it 100% correct. I saw GP on Storytellers a couple of days ago. She explained this song in great detail. Everything you said is spot on! Bravo for your intuition!

hmm, first to comment. i've only heard of this song cuz of "All My Children", for the past several months it's been played in montages. it's a pretty song, good lyrics, and i really like the singer's voice. i just feel it was totally overplayed during the worst possible storylines of AMC history and wish it hadn't been, cuz it's such a pretty song but sadly i can't listen to it ever again. :(

I LOVE THIS SONG! I have not heard it on AMC, but I cannot stop playing it. It is unbelievably beautiful and just pulls at your heart. This is my favorite of all her songs. "My love is a blanket" great line.

I actually disagree. I think this song is about two people who obviously love each other, but the guy just can't commit to her. There is something missing, and that missing piece is what keeps them apart. To explain, "Yesterday he looked at me With a tear in his eye and said I'll always tell you you're my friend I hope i don't have to lie Cause it's clear you love another man I said you're damn right"
I would say that he is saying that he's like 2 different people and she loves the other person that he is (not the one who keeps leaving her, "He was always stepping out for air and he froze.") It's sad because these two people are meant for eachother but can't get over that one obstacle... but that's just how I see it.

i totally agree..there's no third person..that's the best part of this song: the problem they have is inside of them..those are the kind of problem that you are never able to face. a cheating would be just superficial.

i completely agree. she seems to love too much a man who can't love her enough.
