Hammerhead Lyrics

I am the one:
Camouflage and guns;
Risk my life
To keep my people from harm.

Authority
Vested in me,
I sacrifice
With my brothers in arms.

Through this doorway—
What's on the other side?
Never knowing
Exactly what I'll find.
Locked and loaded,
Voices screaming, “Let's go!”
“Come on!”
“Do it!”
“Here we go!”

I’ll take a life
That others may live:
Oh, that's just the way it goes.
I’ll shut my eyes.
It hammers in my head.
Where it'll end,
Nobody knows.

I’ll take a life;
Ten others may live:
Oh, that's just the way it goes.
It’s playing over and over in my head.
Where it'll end,
Nobody knows.

Stay the course:
Reasonable force.
I believe
I serve a greater good.

Smoke and dust;
Enemies are crushed.
Nothing left
Where a man once stood.

Through this doorway—
What's on the other side?
Never knowing
Exactly what I'll find.
Locked and loaded,
Voices screaming, “Let's go!”
But I'm just doing what I'm told.

I’ll take a life
That others may live:
Oh, that's just the way it goes.
I’ll shut my eyes.
It hammers in my head.
Where it'll end,
Nobody knows.

I’ll take this life;
Ten others may live:
Oh, that's just the way it goes.
It's playing over and over in my head.
Where it begins and where it'll end,
Nobody knows.

Bang, bang, it hammers in my head.
Bang, bang, it hammers in my head.
Bang, bang, it hammers in my head,
In my head,
In my head.

You know I walk through the valley of the Shadow of Death.
I fear no evil for Thou art with me.
Locked and loaded,
Gonna find my truth now.
I'm busting through.
All hell breaks loose, and—

And you can hide behind your desks now!
And you can cry, “Teacher, come help me!'
Through you all,
My aim is true!
My aim is true!
My aim is true.

I believe this song could be sending the message that things arent always as they seem. And things may seem better than they actually are. The reason i feel this way is because the beginning of the song gives off the sense that the song is about a solider or marine or something like that, but by the end of the song you find that what you thought was a song about a heroic solider, is actually just about some maniac shooting up a school. this is just how i feel.

I don't know if someone has already said this recently because I read the first 10 or so comments and decided to throw my two cents in. The song is about school shcoting like many of you have said but the military illusion in the first part of the song is to show the mindset of some of these people that go out and do the shootings. On top of that it shows how the over glorification of the military and their mindset in this country (America) can spawn such dellusions in the younger people and they can use this as a justification (in their minds) to go out and kill the innocent students. While not as straight forward as Come Out and Play, this song still does a fantastic job at shedding light on the problem of school shootings and, in my oppinion, is even better because it goes into one of the mindsets that a person undertaking this act can experience.

The way Dexter talked about this song, I thought it would be less deceptive, but Adrenalinne's comment put it back in a brilliant light for me. These maniacs usually do have their motives twisted from good intentions, and believe they're in the right. We never really find out what's going on in their brains since they usually finish by paining the blackboard with them The road to hell is paved with good intentions, as they say. These people probably never felt any less sane than any of us feel right now...

Kind of funny how this song is so thematically similar to Come Out and Play, but where that one took a sarcastic, ironic tone, this one is brutal, unrelenting, and the thought-provoking kind of disturbing.

I think that everything but the last part is about the war and violence, and the last part of the song is there to show how people today are influenced by the violence in the world.

It's about american soldiers, the so-called "peacemakers".

The picture is like this:

he "closes his eyes" and just starts shooting everywhere, at anyone, whether they armed or not, and whether they're military or not, while the shots "hammer in his head" and "all hell breaks loose". And "you can hide behind your desks", you won't get out alive.

And after that there's only "smoke and dust" and "nothing left where a man once stood".

The last verse clearly implies that he's in some school. But it's not just some maniac shooting kids, it's american "peacemakers" (several of them, as implied by "voices screaming: let's go!") shooting kids in schools in foreign countries (Iraq, Syria, Libya.............................).

And after all that, these monsters still "believe they serve a greater good".

According to Dexter, Hammerhead is about school shootings!

I definitely see the reference to school shootings, but it only seems to really point to that in the last few stanzas of the song...the entire rest of the song though really looks like it's about Iraq. Phrases such as "brothers in arms", "i'm just doing what i'm told" "stay the course", "ill take your life that others may live" seem to link to the Iraq war and don't make sense in relationship to school shootings. But that's good input Master.
