Citizen Soldier Lyrics
Beyond the boundaries of your city’s lights
Stand the heroes waiting for your cries
So many times you did not bring this on yourself
When that moment finally comes, I’ll be there to help
And on that day when you need your brothers and sisters to care
I’ll be right here
Citizen soldiers holding the life of the ones that we guide from the dark of despair
Standing on guard for the ones that we’ve sheltered
We’ll always be ready because we will always be there
When there are people crying in the streets
When they're starving for a meal to eat
When they simply need a place to make their beds
Right here underneath my wing you can rest your head
On that day when you need your brothers and sisters to care
I'll be right here
Citizen soldiers holding the life of the ones that we guide from the dark of despair
Standing on guard for the ones that we've sheltered
We'll always be ready because we will always be there
Hope and pray that you never need me
But rest assured, I will not let you down
I walk beside you, but you may not see me
The strongest among you may not wear a crown
On that day when you need your brothers and sisters to care
I'll be right here
On that day when you don't have the strength for the burden you bear
I'll be right here

I normally don't post to this lyric site much anymore, but the ignorant comments by some incite me to not hold my tounge.
How come nobody has paid attention to the lyrics which read:
When there are people crying in the streets When they're starving for a meal to eat, When they simply need a place to make their beds, Right here underneath my wing you can rest your head. ???
Does it not occur to any of you that this song was written by a band from Mississippi, a state just east of Louisiana. YES - THAT Lousiana! The same one devastated by a hurricane. Does it not occur to anyone that this song is about the National Guard's response and emergency aid to Weather related crisis? Crisis that include the flooding of Iowa. Hurricane's that affect Florida.
This song has NOTHING to do with WAR, nor the NATIONAL GUARD'S place in war. It's about the NG's service to thier fellow citizens to protect them from further harm and tragedy. Everytime I hear this song, my heart fills with pride and also a mild sadness knowing this song's inspiration was born of immeasurable human suffering. This song moves me to tears everytime I hear it.
And to the poster above who did mention that even regular U.S. Service men and women come to the aid of others around the world, I thank you. I am former U.S. Navy, and have many Navy friends today. One was aboard the nuclear aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln when it ported into Jakarta, Indonsesia. The ship's electricity generating power plant provided much need power to the country when it's power stations were decimated by the 2005 Tsunami. The U.S. Military came to the aid of Haiti after the terrible earthquake which has killed thousands. There is no other organization in the world capable of the logistical support and runway building that America's Armed Forces can provide.
If you hate America's involvement in wars, fine. You are entitled to that. But don't take this song out of context to spew out your opinions that have nothing to do with the message and point of this song: the National Guard of our country, be they Army, Air Force, Navy or Marine - all deserve the highest respect for being ready to serve on a moment's notice and to help protect thier countrymen from calamity.
Thank you to all who have served. I love you all and may God bless you and your familys for sacrifices made both great and small.
@tigerx2374 I agree entirely with your song interpretation. My father was also Navy, and served on a submarine during the Gulf Wars, and saw deployment during and after the initial occupation of Afghanistan. He missed my sister's birth, overseas, on station. When he came back, he started listening to 3 Doors Down, because they show respect to the National Guard in their songs. God bless you, thank you for your service to your country, thank you for the sacrifices you and your family, blood and brothers in arms, have made, and Go Navy! HOOYAH!

It is a great song, and a great tribute. I have, however, seen a different versian of the lyrics. The words are the same, but notice the capitalization choices. http://www.sweetslyrics.com/553228.3%20DOORS%20DOWN%20-%20Citizen%20Soldiers%20.html
Noticing that, and some of the word choices that 3 Doors Down has chosen (your city lights, as opposed to our city lights); I think this song was written from God's point of view. I think it should be obvious enough if you just read it through with that idea
I'll agree with you Personmanthingguy. and just because "someone is doing there job" doesn't mean they are doing the right thing
I just discovered this song today, and it touches my heart deeply. I've always had the greatest of respect for the protectors of peace, and an even greater respect for those who have made the greatest sacrifice in the name of peace and freedom.
I hope this song is pro troops rather than pro war. we should definitely support the troops cause they didn't ask for this war and they're just doing their job... but no one should ever support this current war. It's just Vietnam all over again. But other than this one song that I may or may not have a problem with the album is great. :)
I appreciate this song because it opens the door for an important debate. It speaks of saving these people from "the dark of despair," but if we were to read into the history of this country's military I think we would see that it is the cause - not the solution - of this despair. Propaganda is most clearly evident when holding a certain opinion - in this case NOT supporting our troops - runs one the risk of absolute ostracism. Einstein put it simply: "Wars will end when men refuse to fight." Wake up people! These invasions have absolutely NOTHING to do with humanitarian concerns. Our military has been stationed in these countryies only to protect the elite's economic interests in the Middle East, although that's not what Big Brother would have you believe. I'm sorry, but you cannot support the troops without supporting the war. It's the same as saying "I don't agree with cocaine use, but I support this country's cocaine dealers." TFY. QA. Enough said.
I think this is a great tribute to those we have across seas
It's not just about those who serve OCONUS though, It's about those who serve in the CONUS as well
