Into The Flood Lyrics

all this time is ash and sand
it's running thru my hands
so what if i don't feel it
so what if i don't see it
torn apart from limb to limb
and put in place again
so what if i don't feel it
innocence is gone
and you don't taste the same
i know that you don't see it
the steps between us is starting to show
the space between us is starting to grow
i know that you don't see it
all this time is ash and sand
running thru our hands
so what if i don't feel it

This is one of my favorite atal songs of all time. It has such a powerful, yet terrible meaning behind it. It's something that we've all experienced, or are going to eventually, and it's one of the worst feelings in the world. When it become a one sided relationship (with whoever) and that one person who seems to be holding it together is starting to loose it because they've finally realized that the other person doesn't care anymore and would give up that "bond" that they once had for the next thing that comes along. This song really is beautiful and speaks to everyone, at least once in your life.

In my opinion, the lyrics seem to represent a relationship going stale.

"all this time is ash and sand, its running thru my hands" that time has no meaning to it anymore. more to the point, the time he spends with her holds no basis it, theres no form or structure.

"so what if i dont feel/see it" talking about how he doesn't feel what he used to, and how he doesn't see a reason to stay with her.

"torn apart from limb to limb and put in place again" i get the picture that they were in a fight where he was just getting torn apart. while sitting there taking it in a numb surreal world of his own. which brings it back to the "so what if i dont feel it" line

"innocence is gone" the beginning of a relationship is amazing and blissful and well.. innocent. now its gone stale and you know every little flaw about a person and there is nothing holding you back from pointing those flaws out. maybe the cause of the above fight.

"and you dont taste the same" the girl changed, lost her innocence. overall not the girl he fell in love with.

and finally "the steps between us is starting to show the space between us is starting to grow" this is kind of self explanitory. Their differences are starting to come to the surface and they are beginning to see that they are growing apart.

then back to the first couple of lines to recap.

While I do agree with you for the most part aecter, I see it more as perhaps she was unfaithful to him at one time, he forgive her for her misdeed and as much as he would like to put it behind him, it's slowly beginning to effect their relationship.

I agree with the interpretation of "All this time is ash and sand." He says, "So what if I don't feel/see it?" as sort of defensive, saying that their relationship isn't as strong as it once was, but it isn't his fault. It's falling apart because of her mistake, and as such he has a difficult time feeling very guilty about it.

"Torn apart from limb to limb and put in place again" could refer to him discovering the bad news and being truly heartbroken over it. After discussion and the like, he slowly begins to trust her again, hence "put in place again." However, the foil between the word "torn" and the phrase "put in place" could better show that the damage done was not fully repaired.

"Innocence is gone" could refer to the pureness of their relationship being tarnished forever due to her mistake.

"You don't taste the same" is kind of self-explanatory. Every time he kisses her, the thought of what happened is stuck in the back of his head. As a result, whatever they shared before was ruined. The line together pounds the fact home that the innocent nature that was once there is now gone.

"The steps between us are starting to show, the space between us is starting to grow" is also pretty self explanatory. Aecter nailed it.

I love this song. ATAL is amazing.

Any thoughts on what the title, "Into the Flood" both this song and the EP means?

I had downloaded but never listened to this album/song. All day I was having a trust issue with my wife, not telling me about where she was last night. I finally left the house when I knew she was lying about something. I put on this record for the first time ever because I've been listening to their other albums a lot lately and wanted something new. About the time I heard this song for the very first time, she confessed to me that she cheated on me. The timing of it all couldn't be any more coincidental. I have been listening to this song on repeat all night. I don't know what to feel right now... but, so what if I don't feel it.
