Milk and Honey Lyrics

I'm sick of waking up alone,
Honey I'm pleading
let's put away the sticks and stones
be human beings
I have the sense to be afraid to be a fool

You push me out again
You push me up against a wall
You told me once your body flowed
with milk and honey
but what happened to our boy
inside your tummy?
I have the sense to be afraid, to be a fool
but I'm on the fence
to make you stay or to be cruel

You perfume covered helpless louse,
look on the bright side
See, every time you laugh out loud
I'm crying inside
I have the sense to be afraid, to be the fool
Try commonsense. Make me believe
believe in you

I should have known you'd kick me hard
when I'm on the ground

i think this song is about a failing relationship, or a relationship that has gone really wrong and nearing its end. it's like the guy is doing everything he can to save the relationship, but the girl is always "pushing him away", and just doesn't care at all whether or not their relationship is going for a nosedive.

i like these lines: Try commonsense. Make me believe in you I should have known you'd kick me hard when I'm on the ground

bittersweet.

Jeff Buckley-esque. This song emotes. Not as implicit as Jeff's lyrics, but as powerful in their meaning and combination of the soulful sonic guitar-based track. That's high praise in my book for such a young band when they recorded it, Underrated gem.

My favorite.

My absolute favorite track on the album. A heart wrenching plea that sings honestly and vulnerably. The lead singer's voice lends itself brilliantly to the angst needed to deliver this song.

As the popular adage goes, "loving someone means giving them the power to break your heart and trusting them not to." Although usually reserved for the teenage angst-ridden blogs of today, it applies to everything.

"Make me believe believe in you"

those 6 words are so special so beautiful it seems like they've lost faith in their partner and they want so much to trust them again but they just can't "I should have known you'd kick me hard when I'm on the ground" they've been begging and thinking of all the reasons they think they should be together then they conclude that no they can't trust, can't believe

I think it's about what a couple can go through after the loss of a child ("but what happened to our boy inside your tummy?"), and the torment it can put both sides through... that now after everything they know things can never be perfect again.

I think this song is about a relationship that is nearing it's end, but the guy can't decide whether to let it go or give it a second chance. He's saying: "You push me out again, you push me up against a wall." I think what he's saying is that this girl is pushing him away, and he has the sense to be afraid (to leave and to be alone) but he also has the sense to a be a fool (to stay, and pretend it's working) and he's "on the fence, to make you stay (with him so it's his fault no hers) or to be cruel (and let her go).

I have to agree a lot with fabianna's comment. Also to add:

"let's put away the sticks and stones be human beings" Sounds like they are in heavy arguements and he wishes them to be "humans" about this all.

"I have the sense to be afraid to be a fool" Perhaps he keeps coming back into the relationship. Even though she continues to push him out and push him against walls, situations he can't get out of.

"You told me once your body flowed with milk and honey but what happened to our boy inside your tummy?" Are some of the saddest lines I've ever heard... Its obvious that she has gotten an abortion. Perhaps the relationship went really wrong and in anger she aborted the baby. Poor guy, whoever the song is about :<

"I have the sense to be afraid, to be a fool but I'm on the fence to make you stay or to be cruel" At this point he still loves her, but now because of what happened with the aborted baby, he is wondering whether he should try and keep the relationship going or be cruel. I can relate to this entirely as it is in my scorpio nature to be cruel to people who hurt me.... Even if I loved them once.

At this next part, its obvious he has chosen to be cruel: "You perfume covered helpless louse, look on the bright side See, every time you laugh out loud I'm crying inside"

He's hurt by all of this and she obviously no longer loves him. (Think about the aborted baby). Calling her a louse shows that he despises her yet still loves her as he is "crying inside". Her laughing shows sarcasm, one of the worse forms of cruelty in my opinion.

"Make me believe believe in you" Believe that there is love still?

"I should have known you'd kick me hard when I'm on the ground" This whole situation was not his fault. It can be seen clearly that she has brought him down "to the ground". "Kicked" him where it hurts. She's hurting him badly, and he tried to hold on. But she keeps pushing him away. He should have known she'd hurt him. As fabianna said: "loving someone means giving them the power to break your heart and trusting them not to."

Beautiful.

Agreed 100%. Can't beleive it took up to the 8th comment for someone to say she got an abortion in spite of him. There's not much hidden in these lyrics; he's still willing to be the fool, if she can make him beleive in her again.

i love the line

"whatever happened to our boy inside your tummy"

it makes me want to cry EVERY time. its so heart-wrenching.

this song conveys the pain, heart ache, and agony of a relationship nearing its end when there is nothing left to be done.
